Description
The Obergärige Hausbrauerei Uerige (top-fermented craft brewery) is not a museum, but an exceedingly modern food business where a craft rich in centuries of tradition is carried out. It goes without saying that the Reinheitsgebot, or Purity Law dating from 1516, is still adhered to, because its results are good and lasting, relying, as it does, on nature as one of its main factors. Which is exactly what we do, too: our yummy droplet is made of nothing but water, barley, wheat malt, and our Uerige yeast.

Bottle at post pre ZBF 2010. I had great hopes for this. Some cardboard, oxidation on aroma. Better in mouth. Not as good as either the regular which I had in Dusseldorf in the brewpub or the Sticke I had at Battersea BF. VEry syrupy and nutty in mouth. Not great.

Bottle. Pours brown with some carbonation bubbles but no head. Lots and lots of malt, cola popcicles, soy and hops. Defenitely one of the best and most interestign german beers I’ve had.

Bottle. Oh my god! What a beer! Sweet aroma of caramel ice cream, chocolate, some hops, and lots of malt. The taste is a "well balanced malt overdose". Notes of burned caramel, malty tartness, sweet bread, cocoa. Incredible mouthfeel and balance. You’re able to notice all nuances of the beer. Its a heavy tasting beer with a kind of light body wich makes it easy to drink.

11.2 fl oz swing top bottle purchased at Lukas Liquors in Kansas City, Missouri. Pour is a very hazed brown copper ruby with a well formed two inch light tan head. Eventually falls with nice coating lace. Aroma is gentle maltiness, nice grain and light sweetness. Behind the malt is an interesting spice, almost clove yeastiness. Taste is the malt, full and cereal grain sweet, followed closely by a licorice anise flavor that was surprising, but not unpleasant. As it warms, this yields to a softer almost soy taste, that also turns quite dry in the finish. The dry finish reveals a bit of the alcohol heat. Palate is medium bodied, with above average lively carbonation. As mentioned, alcohol is present in the finish and warms the chest. Unique beer, very original flavor profile.

Bottle. Complex and highly drinkable masterpiece! The aroma has got some overpowering malts, and also more hops than i would have expected. Complex taste of dark, dark syrup and mighty mighty malt. The aftertaste has got some citrus hops and a smoked malt bitterness. Well balanced and smooth.

Cask at the brewery. Masterly bitter and hoppy, grass, earthy, hay. There is a bit of light, dry, caramel. Not much happening but hops this time. Just a touch of wine in the nose. Not as likable as it was last time I had it here. Still the bitterest, but lacking balance. Good though. 2007, September: Oak cask. Uerige pub. Alstadt, Dusseldof. Where else? Deep copper color. Very hoppy. Good fruit, with a bit of caramel, roasted amber malt, earth. Dry hop and roasted malt finish. Great stuff. Hoppiest yet, but very good malt as well. The best alt in the world. 8/4/8/4/17

Mellow and nutty, with moderate spicy hops. An aging excellent English Barley Wine now.
2013-08-17, no date on the label, code 14.06; 7-5-10-5-17=44
The aroma doesn’t develop easily; caramel, with some terreaux character, missing the hops, reminiscent of some American Amber. Full bodied, with the most balanced caramel/malt flavor, strong nutty presence, medium sweetness, strong bitterness. Harmonious.
One of the best Barley Wines of the modern era.
2012-09-19, bottle from La Cave à Bulles, Paris, no date on the label, but fresh; 8-5-8-5-17=43
It pours a dark brown color, hazy, with generous compact head. There is a very rich malt aroma, with caramel, chocolate and pungent continental hops, and light horse/animal character, hay barn. Full bodied, with round mouthfeel; very good malt and caramel flavor, sweet, nutty, and with strong bitterness, of English or German tradition.
The perfect English Barley Wine.
2009-10-24, bottle from New Beer Distributors, NYC, 9-4-8-5-18=44
Brown color, small head. Good caramel aroma, light chestnut honey, nuts, hop. Perfect body strength, very rich caramel flavor; there is a nice sticky sweetness, dark honey, light roasted nuts; bold bitterness, and some hop qualities. Balanced, strong and complex. Comforting final warmth. The more I drink, the more I like this beer. Excellent.

11.2 fl oz swing top bottle purchased at Lukas in Kansas City, Missouri. Bottled on 10.08 code 09.09. Opens with a pop. Pour is hazed orange copper brown with a lasting three inch creamy off white head. Head falls eventually with thick foamy lacing. Aroma of fresh grass, herbal hay and slight lemon citrus element. Under that is an almost minty grain element. The freshness of the nose really surprised me; given the age of this bottle(perhaps I am just misreading the bottled on, perhaps this is August 10th, not October 2008) I was expecting something a bit duller. Taste is clean grain biscuit sweet malt up front, followed quickly by the grass hay herbal and citrus of the nose. The finish has some nice yeast character to it, showing some clove and spice. Palate is medium, with active carbonation. Really satisfying and easy to drink.
