De Dolle Brouwers

Microbrewery in Diksmuide, West Flanders, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: De Dolle Brouwers

Established in 1980

Contact
Roeselarestraat 12B, Diksmuide, 8600, Belgium
Description
The founder of the brewery was a doctor in medicine, Louis Nevejan.

We have recently found papers in the archives stating that the first building dates from 1835 AD. Once it was both a brewery and distillery. The founder died in 1882 and the brewery was sold to Alouis Costenoble. The family brewed for three generations until 1980 when the brewery stopped.

Beer brands included COQ PILS OUD BRUIN & COSMOS. In Esen there were six breweries (all small and part-time) and two distilleries. The actual brewer is doing historical research on West-Flanders breweries since 1900 AD, and has got the 'GOLDEN HAMMER' Trophy, a two yearly award for historic research on breweries. This was attributed by vzw 't Hamerken in Bruges on March 27, 2000 AD

Hazy gold ale with a thick white head. Fruity oranges and spices, hops in final, sweet candy sugar and hops. Alcohol in the finish, like grapa or another spirit. Body is smooth but not overly sweet or alcoholic.

An unclear orange beer with a huge orange head. The aroma is very yeasty and spicy. The flavor is malty and very round spicy with light notes of white wine but also yeast. The alcohol burns a little in the end.

An interesting take on a stout by a brewery that makes great belgians - of course, because of this this beer is more like a belgian than an actual stout, but I can’t really complain about that - completely opaque pour, with medium tan head and impressive lacework - very yeasty, musty, belgiany aroma, with hints of more imperial stout-like smells, like toffee, black coffee and anise - high carbonation brings a mouthful of foam, but the flavors still come through well - woody, slight roasty, coffee and chocolate flavors at first, overcome quickly by sweeter, more belgian quadrupel-like flavors of dark fruit, vinous qualities - finish slants to the bitter side, but mild sweetness still lingers - an interesting take, but, while I am glad de dolle is trying new things, I wouldn’t call this a huge success.

Bottle Pours a deep dark brown with an imense pale tan head. Lots of thick lacing. Aromas are plums, figs, raisons and dark fairly sweet malts. Lots going on here. Flaovrs are a very rich dark pitted fruit, brown sugar, chocolate and a fairly strong but pleasant alcohol slant. There is some of that belgian yeat/spice as well. Body is rich and complex, fairly lively carbonation and a dark malty slightly sweet finish. Very interesting.

2000 bottle @ the DC/VA/MD gathering compliments of Herftydrf (thanks Andre, this was quite a treat!). Even though I took the bottle in my car, on the airplane, then back in the car, then proceeded to drop it on the concrete the day of the gathering (still can’t believe it didnt break), and finally walked 13 blocks carrying it to the gathering, it still did not explode or gush or anything like that when I opened it. Just a bit of foam and then that was it. A real testament to the quality of De Dolle’s brewing. A lovely ruddy amber, with some dark browns, rusty oranges, plenty of sediment, great amount of foamy white head with little yellow flecks in it. Aroma of strong belgian yeast, just what you’d expect from De Dolle, though it seems like more of a trappist strain. Lightly sour raspberries, oranges, creme brulee and light wood notes, intertwined with soft caramel and cherry malt notes. Very pleasant, well-integrated and restrained nose. Flavor is nothing like I was expecting. Soft and malty up front, with a good candi sugar, honey sweetness followed by the fruit esters. The sourness comes towards the end, mixing with a delightfully warming alchol sensation, some dry old wood, lightly oily and a moderate dose of vinegar. But all in all, it’s nowhere near as acidic as I was expecting. The yeast is very dominant, but the yeast and sweet malt, with the dark candi sugar give it more of a Belgian Dark Strong feel at the start. Regardless, it dries out, has some good wood and vinegar notes and ends pleasingly tart. Fine stuff, and well balanced if perhaps a bit too sweet up front. This thing’s got plenty more years of aging in it (not surprisingly).

Havent updated my notes, but my score is where I feel it should. Will add my notes soon.

Very interesting beer- I’ve never been let down by De Dolle. More of a Belgian Strong Ale than a stout. Deep cloudy red-brown body, topped by a persistent medium tan head. Awesome, complex aroma of plum, cherry, prune, toffee, and cinnamon, all embedded in a fresh bread dough matrix. The flavor was similarly imbued with plum, grape, and soy components, hints of licorice, and plenty of bready yeast. One part ale and one part red wine. Finishes with concord grapes and alcohol bite. Complex, rich, and delicious.

Bottle Poured a deep mamber with a modest off white head and very nice even lacing. Aroma was a very nice musty yeasty, malty conglomerant. Very tart and dry flavor. Old wood and dark pitted fruit. Quite dry, Brut-ish and fizzy I might say. Finish was...dry and quick.
