330 ml. bottle @ home. Procured from Willems & Zoon. Golden, only lightly hazy, paper white solid head. Nose is heavily yeast, light spoiled white bread / milk note, mineral. Heavy carbonation, mineral, faint sulphur spoiled milk yeast, plenty of chalk, off-bread. Carbonation is far too high. Odd mineral nature, light floral bitterness, white pepper. Some Zonderik beers were nice but don’t get the appeal of this, another unnecessarily blond Belgian Ale at best. Rather dull, unfortunate.

Even more complicated version of Zonderik Tripel, apparently refermented with champagne yeast. The ’X’ in the name refers to the ABV. Medium thick, off-white, sticky head, colour hazy orangey blonde. Aroma of Roquefort cheese, gingerbread, coriander, honey, butterscotch, yeast, exotic fruits, some tannins. Complex taste with sweetish onset, fruity and vinous, spicy notes, soft caramelly malt background, aromatic spiced and hoppy finish with a hint of woodiness and warming alcohol. Really interesting and considerably better than the regular version, at least in my experience.

Second beer of this beer company, marketed as a ’pleasure beer’ and spiced with not just your ordinary coriander, but cumin seed and caraway, also with added honey and oak aged. Creamy, off-white head, deep peach blonde colour, near amber. Aroma of vanilla, butter, honey, green apple, white grapes, coriander, fennel, dough, oak, yoghurt and cheese. Subdued fruity onset, light sweetish, a bit buttery, sourish accent, light bitter finish with slight woody touch and retronasal spiciness but some solvents as well. Complex recipe but not quite delivering what the recipe promises.

Tasted as Zonderik Dubbel Donker, since 2009. Light beige, creamy head over a dark bronze, misty beer. Aroma of nutty malts, liquorice, coriander, bitter chocolate, cloves, candied dates, some DMS. Dryish taste, nutty maltiness, strong carbo, lots of coriander, creamy finish with some solvents and some roasted bitterness, as well as a late and brief herbal hoppiness.

Bottle at Barely Legal Tasting Room Pours Dark yellow / orange . Good and stable white head . Smell is grainy, bit sweet, bit bitter, very in balance . Taste is very complex . Oak, buttery , grains, sweet ( vanilla ) , almost like ... bourbon ? Just on the borther of overpowering, but just right... Slightly bitter , some malty sweetness . Some honey . Nowhere on the bottle / this site , it officially sais this one is barrel aged .. But tastewise ? i’d be very surprised if it were not ... Nice one !
