Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Bottle that I picked up from TripelB Worcester and consumed at home Saturday 14th March 2026 watching a film called Substance on Amazon Prime MUBI after Fin and Loz's Spicy Pork & Fennel Polpette Cannelloni for tea. Pours shark eye black with a mid sized beige head. Roasted malts doninate the aroma but the barrel ageing is also noted..Taste following a similar trajectory, but there's chocolate, bitter cocoa and a slight dark fruity tang amongst the roasted malts. These Black Damnation beers can be very hit and miss, the last one I had was a miss but this is a hit, it's nicely done, nothing over the top about it, v.good. Score: 8.0

A dark, almost black beer, a head is very small and beige. Aroma has lots of dried fruits, prune, raisin, grapes, some barrel. Taste has dried fruits, raisin, prune, some barrel with grapes Full bodied, not stickyness. There is no the same magic of normal Pannepot.

A very dark brown beer, a head is small and beige. Aroma has dried fruitness, raisin is dominating, also light barrel. Taste has dried fruitness, raisin, prune, light barrel. Onlly medium bodied. This is too simple, it's quite unexpected, because the potential of Pannepot is there.

Black and Tan my arse. Bottle - bb 4/21 + 5 years, which makes it just a few weeks in date. Almost black with a fat coat of tan head. Big Welsh cake and roast aroma with citrus overtones. Some liquorice, Bourbon, berries. Syrupy, low carbonation. Sweet with slow-moving roast and cake, before liquorice, pine, lots of oak and strong bitterness lighten the palate a little. Not their best but still pretty good and certainly holding up.

Bottle picked up from TripelB Worcester and consumed at home Saturday 7th March 2026 watching the Gordon Ramsay series on Netflix. Pours shark eye black there was barely a head to be noticed so cannot comment on this as didn't see the colour of any bubbles or film. Aroma is bitter cocoa, I also pick up some of the barrel ageing and of course roasted malts. Taste is following a similar trajectory, peaty but not aggressively so, a little tart and tangy. This follows a very different direction to most modern Imperial Stouts and whilst I applaud that because it's not cloyingly sweet (I'm looking at you here Vault City) it's nonetheless a bit dull, well made bit lacks a spark.Score 7.3
