Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Bottle thanks to Stuu.
Appearance - deep brown to black and opaque. Thin beige head.
Nose - faint iodine and wood barrel note but with not much of the expected Islay peat smoke.
Taste - saline again, and now some peat with chocolate and dry wood.
Palate - medium to full bodied, dry roast and woody finish.
Overall - good if not as smoky as expected.

Almost clear dark brown beer, small bubbly tan head. Smooth and fairly light palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Light bodied dark malts, rich in flavour. Unsweet dark chocolate malts, a very mild dark malt cream. Good ripe fruity whiskey, mild spice. Airy and semi dry finish. Good ripe fruity whiskey vibe here but, lacks an overall cohesiveness for me.

Bottle from Raynville Superstore. It pours clear dark ruby - brown with a small yellow - khaki head. The aroma is rich and intoxicating, plenty of dark and dried fruits, raisins, sultana, date, fig, heady notes of rum, rum soaked oak, cola cubes, plum wine, toasted brown sugar and molasses. The taste is smooth, bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, toasted brown sugar, cola, Dr Pepper, molasses, cacao nibs, booze soaked dried fruits, toasted fruit cake, rum soaked oak, rum baba, malt loaf, earthy, pie crust, warming booze, burnt toast and a touch of liquorice with a drying, toothy finish. Medium - fullsome body and fine+ carbonation. Rum character works we.with the base biers.
