Description
The “Struise” concept is based on creativity, innovation, quality, sustainability and friendship. We started developing beers anno 2001, at a holiday resort in the village of Lo-Reninge, in a small barn at an ostrich farm called “De Noordhoek”. The first beer we ever developed there, was an Old Style wheat-beer, called “Struise Witte”. The name “Struise” is taken from Flemish slang for ostrich. Our brewery coat of arms takes it a step further and features a proud ostrich amongst knight’s helmet, shield and feathers.
Back in 2003 we decided to go commercial with our latest creation, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale called “Pannepot”. Not with an own installation, for that we did not have the money yet, however, we proceeded as gipsy brewers. First at the Coulier Brewery and later at the nearby Deca Brewery in Woesten / Vleteren. In 2009, we moved to a school facility in the village of Oostvleteren, and where we’ve been brewing our beers independently since 2012.

Draught. Dark brown to black. Smallish head. Dark fruits, figs and half malts and candy sugars. Good but not quite as amazing as I’d hoped

On tap at Pressklubben, pours a clear bright amber with a small white head. Aroma has soft tomatoey notes, Belgian yeast, and bready malt. Flavour is tangy, with V8 juice, some Belgian yeast, and more tomato notes. This is a fun idea but it just doesn’t work.

On tap at Internationella Pressklubben. Pours clear amber with a white head. Saison yeast and sour tomatoes on the nose. Flavour is earthy, lots of tart tomato, some vegetables, some saison. Not great.

On tap at Man in the Moon, pours a deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma has plenty of bourbon barrels, Belgian yeast and almost a port-like presence. Flavour has a nice bourbon character, earthy rye, some spicy Belgian yeast, and soft port character. Really nice barrel treatment on a great base. Excellent.

Bottle from HoTM. It pours oily jet black with a small brown head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, charred, umami, liquorice, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, burnt toast, molasses, rocky road, whisky soaked oak, savoury and saline notes. The taste is slick, oily, thick, chewy, dark roasted malt, toasty, bitter - sweet character, fruitier than on the aroma, jammy fruits, bramble, tangy raspberry, dark chocolate, treacle, whisky soaked oak, slightly charred Dundee cake, warming booze and toasty brown sugars with a smooth whisky soaked fruit cake finale. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and slick mouth feel. Flavourful, rounded and unctuous.
