Double test between two versions of the same beer, courtesy of the monk responsible for the brewery, and a friend of the brewer. Points above for version B, points below (in brackets) for version A. Tasted with Jacob Lövenlund & MartinKubert Fully hazy orange, orange tinted head, version A fast gone, version B very stable, like whipped cream. Nose: version A very orangezest-smelling beer, little else (7/10); version B much more hopped, hoparomas overlying the citrus. Taste: version A is sweet, liquorice, some citrus and a bit adstringent. The alcohol is much more prominent than: version B, which has also citrus, sweetness, but is also slightly hoppy-flavoured, and especially much better balanced beer (both 7/10). Again very much citrus retronasal. Obviously version B is better balanced, version A showing the alcohol more, more aggressive (3/5). Overall, I’d give version A (15/20). What is best about it, and typical for Achel Trappist brewery, is that they are trying to improve ALL the time. Couldn’t ask more from a brewer.

A hazy orange beer with yeast sediment floating around and a huge off-white head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of yeast, oranges, coriander, and earth. The flavor is powerful with strong notes of alcohol, yeast, oranges, and spices amongst those coriander. The mouthfeel is silky soft and ending on a dryness while the alcohol is felt in the throat.

Red/brown colour, huge head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Spicy, fruity flavour. The alcohol is still too evident but a good cellar will surely take care of that. Pity I don’t have a cellar:-(

Deep brown - black body. Fizzy brownish head, mostly lasting and good lacing. Chocolate/caramel aroma. Moderately sweet, lightly bitter flavour. Very similar to Rochefort 8 (I offered a couple of friends a blind-tasting of this and they guessed also Rochefort 8).

Hazy brown color. Light brown steady head, big bubbles, lots of lace. Lots of floating yeast. Aroma is quite similar to Westvleteren 12: prunes, raisins, malt. Complex taste: sweet caramel, raisins, alcohol. Very sweet aftertaste. Great beer.

Dark brown, muddy. Aroma is malty, alcoholic, slightly caramelly. Toasty palate, fairly yeasty as well. Raisin bread, lots of alcohol and a full maltiness. Plays the style in a by-the-numbers kind of way, not venturing from the script and ultimately that is its undoing. Competent Abt, but lacking inspiration. I'll revisit the issue in a couple of batches.

Amber color, poor head. Aroma of malt, caramel, candi sugar, a light fruitness. Malty and sweet; caramel. Easy to drink, but not outstanding.

Cloudy brown color, thick rocky off-white head. Taste is sweet malty, raisin, slight chocolat, metallic hint. Aroma is malty, more nutty. Light alcoholic palate, but also lasting maltiness.

Dark brown with a light, white head - aroma of fruit and aspartame - candied fruits dominate the flavor, slight hops - well balanced and quite tasty - certain flavors remind me of westy 8, but this isn't nearly as good.
