Description
It all started with a neighbor sharing a homemade beer. Liz saw how excited Jamil was and bought him a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas. Jamil became obsessed with brewing the perfect beer and became a homebrew legend in the process by winning a first-place medal in every known beer, mead, and cider style category. Eventually, his passion to brew was too strong and Jamil and Liz decided to take the plunge and open Heretic Brewing Company.

We started by sharing a building with another brewery in 2011, but we always brewed our beer ourselves. Within the first six months we realized there wasn’t enough space for two breweries in one building, so we began the search for a new place. By 2013, we had built a new, modern brewery in the wonderful city of Fairfield, California and moved all our operations there, including our new distillery.

Golden color, white head. The mouth has an excellent malt back bone with tons of tangerines and a great great spicy kick that hits the aback of the throat. Really interesting habenero character. I love the spice, but think another pepper would work better. Really well constructed and lovely beer. The spice just lingers and lingers. Awesome.

Pours black with a light tan head. Hand pump pour so the head is pretty tame. Aroma is chocolate on top of hazelnuts, some caramel sweetness, pretty nutty but not overwhelmingly so, fudge brownies, cocoa powder and dough. Taste is fairly sweet, lots of cocoa flavor, good dose of hazelnut but again it’s well balanced compared to other hazelnut beers that I’ve tried, light herbal note in the finish. Mouthfeel is smooth but it’s a hand pump pour, so that’s not a surprise and may not be indicative of the beer served via other methods, lingering light oily feel. Solid beer, lots of cocoa, good nut balance it adds to the whole without taking over.

On draught at City Beer Store. Clear reddish-amber color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Tropical fruit, hops and malt in the nose. Full-bodied with flavors of grapefruit, resiny hops and sweet malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a fruity hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
