Bottle, courtesy to the invoice of Rilester, split at Bruce’s pad 08/04/14. Black with moderate tan spotting and edgework. Nose is roast malt, chocolate, toffee fudge, molasses, chocolate cake. Taste comprises milk chocolate, light roast, mineral twang, dark fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Solid porter.

Tasting at Bruce’s Pad. Thanks to Colin. Opaque black - brown beer, good mid-tan head. Airy palate. Mildly tangy dark malts. Touch of lactose. That’s about it. A pretty dull porter.

Russet color with brown tinged. Cherry pie, caramel, raisins, brown sugar, moderately sweet nose. Big rich malty mouth with tons of cherry pie, burnt raisin, a touch of molasses perhaps. Big malty and sweet. Well balanced with warmth at the end. Very rounded great winter warmer. A bit brutish, but really good.

Bottle shared in London - thanks to Colin. Pours clear, dark brown with a fine, creamy tan head. Tangy dark malts in the nose, a bit of cocoa, earth, dark berries. Light to medium sweet flavor with charred toast, burnt earth, mild tangy berries, moderate roast. Medium bodied with fine to average, massaging carbonation. Bittersweet cocoa on the finish with further dark bread, earth, burnt wood. Not bad.

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours darkest brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, toast, cocoa, milk chocolate, dirt, almost oxidised nose and a touch of soy sauce. The taste is roasty, toast, watery, charred wood, ash, cocoa, soy sauce and peppery spice with a dry finish. Light-medium body and average carbonation. Pretty watery. Not real depth to it.

Draft at Barrelhouse 101. Listed as Heretic Chocolate Hazelnut Porter. Nose is chocolate, hazelnut creamer, and a hint of coffee. Very dark brown with a small beige head. flavor is nutty and chcolatey.

Bottle to tulip. As it warmed, complexity of aroma showed well with biscuit, toast, fruity esters and dark fruit. Brown with ruby highlights. Overt dark fruit. Strong Belgian yeast and moderate candi sugar. Bready malt is moderate.

On tap at Ale Arsenal. Strong melon and over citrus with malt in support. Amber and clear with a white head that dissipates but leaves moderate lacing. Taste is melon with moderate high bitterness on the back end. Lots of residual sweetness. Tasty by Tasty.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized creamy brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was toasted marshmallow and hazelnut. The flavor was toasty and malty with lots of hazelnut and hints of cocoa, wood and anise. Long toasty hazelnut and cocoa finish. Moderately full bodied and creamy. Excellent.

Latest word is that this may now be called simply Empire. It’s still a BA IS. Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours black/brown with a creamy dark tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, treacle, bourbon, maybe coffee. Full bodied. Flavor is treacle, burnt malt, bourbon, coffee. Finishes somewhat sweet, bourbon, dark malty. Smooth.Tasty. The bourbon is at a nicely moderate level. Everything works really well together. Could be one of the better BA IS brews.
