Description
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.

In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.

tap-Hazy gold with very little aroma, light taste of wheat, some malts, and aqua seltzer, very light bodied, boring stuff.

Slim yellowish head on clear orange beer. Grapey, flowery hops in the nose. Over-powerful hops, but not overly bitter; flowery, very English-character hops. Convincing for an I.P.A.. This is in fact a super-English BB, which is probably what a real India P.A. used to be. Lemon and asparagus flavours. Medium-bodied. Not very filled by malt. Obviously, I like this. Ideomatic for the style.

[draught] Quite light in color for a barleywine - a golden straw color with a medium ring of white lacing - aroma of light hops, maple (the syrup and the wood), and some light fruits that are carried to the flavor, like apples, white grapes - some honey and syrup, but this is not overly sweet - some dessert wine qualities, like a riesling in some ways - quite delicate for an american barleywine - a refreshing change.

100 Barrel Series: Pours a very dark brown color that shows just a bit of ruby light. Thick and somewaht foamy light tan head that lasted pretty well. Thin rings of lacing throughout the glass. The aroma is very roasty with sweet malt in the background. Smooth, rich body but a little on the thin side for a Stout, it almost seemed to be leaning toward a Porter at times. The flavor is toasted malt, coffee and a hint of chocolate. The finish is dry with the same roasted character and a touch of hops. Overall a very smooth Stout that would be top-tier if it were just a bit more robust.

This amber beer had very little head. The aroma was malty with some fruit and no hops, but somewhat weak. The flavor was slightly sweet, but unremarkable. Nothing special going on here.

Pours a fiery orange color with absolutely no head. Strong cinnamon and nutmeg aroma. Normally, I'm not the biggest fan of spiced ales, as the spices usually seem to dominate the palate. This example is a bit different- while the cinnamon and nutmeg are strong, the sweet malt background makes this taste like a cookie instead of spiced spiked water.

I found to be a light, milk chocolately brew, with smooth hints of figs and a touch of earthiness, all complemented by a rounded, yet dry finish. Sampled on draft at Redbones in Boston. Odd I am seem to be the only one who actually found this to be a dubble.

This pours into the glass with an adequate head and a deep garnet color. It has a malty caramel nose and on the tongue it goes like a lagered Porter. There's an easy drinking beer here.

2003 bottle. Deep amber-brown/mahogany, wavy and has some yellow tones. Good off-white head that lasts long. Smells lightly hopped, slightly tart and a touch of roast. Begins with a big slightly syrupy malt, that is chewy and lightly nutty. Body is a satisfying medium. Moderately carbonated. Finish has a big hops flavor for it. More so than traditional for the style I would think, as this one is not overly malted. But the hops taste fresh. Warming up, it gets sweeter, lightly chocolatey. I thought it much better than average.(7/4/7/4/16) 2004 bottle. Not quite as decent as I remembered. More watery, some fruity hops and a very dry malt. Light caramel/mild chocolate sweetness on the finish. Color, aside from being filtered, still looks impressive. (6/4/6/2/11)
Draught at Beacon Hill Pub, 9/24/15.
Wow, what the hell is this? Dark chestnut-amber with roastiness??!! in the flavor leading to spoiled fruits, nearly syrupy caramel and very little redeeming anything. Rating is for this recent sample.

This poured a medium head (small for a wheat beer) over a just slightly cloudy golden yellow beer full of fine bubble streams. There's a lemony yeasty aroma. Very little flavor but it has a creamy smooth mouthfeel. Refreshing hot weather beer.
