Description
The Brewery was established by the De Coster-Depré family in 1897 and it was active till the eighties of the 20th century. Freddy Delvaux and the family gave a new lease of life to the old buildings of the Brewery in 2012. The new Brewery is the place where the Delvaux family can truly demonstrate their passion for special beers. Here, beers are cared for, invented, produced, consumed and promoted, and the Brewery is an unusual combination of science, the art of brewing, tourism and gastronomy.

Sampled draft @ O.B.E.R. Kestbierfestival 2014. (Thx!) Hazy red brown, little head. Nose is odd spice, allspice, fizzy lemon, tad murky yeast. Taste is oily bitter leaves, vegetables, yeast,… Oily & fizzy body. Run of the mill, drinkable. This booklet & some other material about Delvaux I have seen keep talking about their rich history & mad skillz of the brewer but I just do not pick up on it. I am not much of a taster, so there is that.

Bottle @ benzai. Hazy orange to amber colour with a no real head. Smells herbs, spices, sweet, apple, apple pie. Tastes bitter in a non pleasant way, herbs, watery. Too much carbo, thin body. Not worthy of the name ’Kroon’. #supportgerard

Preposterously huge, yellowish, fine & dense head with some lace over faintly copperish clear golden beer. Quite malty nose. Faintly, very mildly sourish nose, bit floral, wheat, lacto (?). Outspokenly toasted malts, toasted flakes; retronasal sweetness (alcohol?) and faintly medicinal. Finish/aftertaste are a bit empty flavourwise. Light to medium body, would never betray its 8.5% ABV - one of its main features is its rather dangerous drinkability. Somehow, I had expected more from this source.

25cl bottle from Chez Marie, Ieper. Very intriguing taste this. Pours clear amber with foamy white head. Aroma of lemon sherbet, taste is creamy pineapple & blackberries with smooth caramel malt keeping things under control. Different and interesting.

From tap at the brewery’s premises. Lovely old-fashioned pale ale (rather than just ’amber ale’ as it is classified here) resurrected by professor Delvaux at De Kroon. The man is a beer engineer striving for perfection and it shows: though essentially a pretty simple beer, this is well-crafted in all the details, without any flaw at all. It is a deep coppery amber beer with slight haze under a yellowish white, stable, sticky head; aroma of red apple, walnut, vanilla, melon, white candi sugar, strawberry, herbal hops. Soft and rounded fruity palate, subtle and utterly elegant, melon touch, nutty malts in the middle, ending in a lightly peppery hop bitter finish, long and dry. Delightful, at least fresh from tap, I have not yet tasted this from a bottle.
