Bottle @ Van Moll Brewpub. Hazy dark brown to black color, average sized quickly diminishing light brown head. Aroma is quite horrible imo, I really don’t like it: malts, smoke, sourish smoke, peat, iodine and fingerpaint I used as a kid in elementary school. Taste is, when I drink it without inhaling any of the aroma, doable. Malts, roasted malts, nicely bitter and only slightly smoke. Why that aroma? Tastes fine but I hate the aroma.

50cl swing top bottle courtesy of and shared with 77ships, a definite move from the previous Grolsch bottle. I’m still not seeing the point of these Dutch breweries doing blends, let alone a collaboration, of lambics and putting these in swing-top bottles - I mean how do you even call it a gueuze? Good but no way this is a gueuze, and a good thing, for them, that this can even be rated.

Blend of Belgian lambics in order to achieve a geuze, apparently made only very limitedly. Courtesy of 77ships. Very thin, loose, off-white, immediately dissolving head, colour a misty peach blonde, like any geuze, but with insufficient sparkling for the style. Soft but full lambic nose, sour yoghurt, old sherry, tons of fruity esters (starfruit, gooseberry, passionfruit), horseblanket, sweat, wood, lemon juice, hay... Puckering lemon acidity at first, very fruity and estery, softer lactic tartness as expected, wheat, some wood in the finish but softer than expected, with the lemon sourness drying the mouth; estery fruitiness lingers, with low ’old hop’ bitterness. Refreshing as any good lambic blend, but it noticeably lacks expertise and maturity: it is not because you put different real lambics together, that a good geuze automatically comes out of it. This one, specifically, lacks saturation to give it the spritzy, champagne-like feel a good geuze should have and I think the choice of lambics could have been better as well to give it more profundity and bitterness. I also wonder why they used this type of bottle instead of a classic geuze bottle. Still, since this is made with only ’true’ lambic and I love traditional lambic no matter what, I did enjoy this a lot, after all.

500 ml. bottle shared by five. Purchased @ De Bierkoning. Deep orange, little to no bubbles. Nose is huge orange peel, dry funk, puckering oak, funk, pleasant sourness, lightly acidic,… Taste is lemon, puckering, big lemon, horse blanket, oak, solid chunk of wood, orange, puckering, gets maybe a touch too acidic in the finish,… Very low carbonation. Quite amazing but very likely exclusively only so thanks to the high quality of the lambiek used, really any blend with these would have probably been amazing.

Not sure what to make of it. Dutchies blending and bottling lambics now... ? Maybe we should stick to only allow blends that were bottled at a gueuzerie or a brewery that explicitly was allowed to blend lambic by the lambic brewery? This just seems like ripping off from the work of others. Anyway, the rating....
Clear orange beer, small irregular white head, unstable, dissipates immediately. Aroma: very nice, fruity, lemony, brett, good funk. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very sourish start, lemony, some vinegar, funky. Aftertaste: bitter, quite some tannins, wood notes, bit of white wine vinegar.

Dutch coffee porter with Guatemala coffee. Moussy and fairly thick, lacing, yellow beige head, eventually dissipating completely, over a very dark mahogany coloured beer, hazy, blackish at first but still well transparent. Strong, aromatic, tangy bouquet of indeed coffee beans and espresso, beautifully mingled with dark baker’s chocolate, smoked meat, bayleaf, dried grapefruit peel, black tea, beef broth, candied figs, dried plums, baked banana, kahlua, black pepper, cumin seed, cocoa powder and a touch whisky. Smooth, creamy onset of candied fruits but only restrainedly sweet, dried stonefruit and raisins, deep basic sourishness with a certain dried lemon peel quality to it, soft carbo, oily and supple, ’fatty’ mouthfeel but not too viscous, nice toasted, caramelly, nutty and eventually more and more chocolatey maltiness, layered but not too demanding, accompanied by a gentle coffee flavour in the end, warm and roasted, juicy still with a subtle candied sweetness all along; finish also has peppery hop bitterness and nice smooth caramel plus a touch smokiness and ’meatiness’. Alcohol remains perfectly hidden. Lovely porter, and the coffee does add an extra layer of flavour; there are no off-flavours either. Clearly well thought out, I like this a lot.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - bottled 10-06-2014, thanks FatPhil, 20150721) The beer poured black. Its head was non-existent. Aroma had burnt malts, coffee and bell peppers. Palate was fll bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were coffee, burnt malts, sweetness, liquorice and bitterness. Aftertaste had sweetness, ash and bitteress. A complex brew with too much coffee compared to amount of other ingredients usegs.
