Description
For 20 years, Shmaltz championed contract brewing and developed a dedicated cult following for their award-winning HE’BREW – The Chosen Beers® and company tradition, Shmaltz opened its own New York State production brewery in 2013, boasting a 50-barrel brewhouse with 35,000 barrels of annual capacity. Shmaltz brewery packages 12 and 22 ounce bottles and kegs of their diverse core and seasonal favorites. Several new releases and collaborations are on tap for 2016, and Shmaltz will continue their acclaimed barrel-aging projects, utilizing a current inventory of more than 400 bourbon, rye whiskey, and tequila barrels.

Pours deep clear amber into a tulip. Off-white head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Spicy rye, sweet rye and hot resin aromas. Thick and boozy with sweet caramel and rye upfront turning hot and spicy before the lasting sweet rye finish.

Sampled from the tap at EBF. Poured a hazy pale gold with a white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a decent amount of spice with sweet grains and honey. Flavor started with honey with a growing spice note as well as a decent amount of sweet grains and breads.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy dark brown with a brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma is full of dark grains with some dark fruits and a bit of a spice and rye whiskey backing. Flavor started with dark grains and a bit of toffee and was joined by some dark fruit with the rye whiskey coming out in the finish.

Bottle at Max’s tasting. Pours black. Tan head. Nose of raisin, plum, brown sugar and toffee. Taste is thick sweet raisin puree, brown sugar and toffee. Almost sickeningly sweet at times. Good sipper.

Sampled from the tap at NotB. Poured near clear amber brown with an off-white head that lasted throughout the beer. Aroma had a good amount of rye, some slight spice, sweet grains, a bit of light fruit and a hint of alcohol. Flavor had smooth rye with some light spice with light fruits and caramel and a bit of alcohol coming out in the finish.

Appearance: Clear dark brown with a medium sized off-white head that dissipates fairly quick leaving very little lacing
Aroma: Sweet toasted malts, dark ripe fruit, toffee and nutty
Taste: Sweet caramel, toasted malts, wet grains with a slight bitterness in the finish

Appearance: Dark brown with a small tan head and some lacing
Aroma: Toasted malts, dark fruits, rye and woody
Taste: Roasted malts, woody, rye and vanilla
A very nice beer, smooth and easy drinkability

Taste: Sweet caramel, herbal tea and light spices
Nice and refreshing, I could drink this everyday.

Bottle. Pours a near black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of roasted malts and bitter dark chocolate with a bit of backing hop bitterness. Flavor starts with roasted malts but quickly becomes bitter with dark chocolate and hops.

A lightly hazed blonde mead with a thick white head. In aroma, herbal honey malt, with light herbal spices, thyme. In mouth, a swet chalky mead, with a bit of cloves, so-so....focus on beer please. On tap at Brewvival, Feb. 26 2011.
