Enjoyed from the \"Bargain Bucket\" at the Globe Pub in Chicago, IL with friends. Appearance very very dark brown (was a dim lit bar so I think it was black but also had a bit of color in it...) with a thin off white head. Aroma heavy on the malts and alcohol, not really getting much with hops. Taste of caramel, malts, a bit of hops, and a lot of alcohol. Also smooth considering the ABV. Really good stuff.

Pour is a black with a large tan head. Aroma is of burnt and roasted malts with some sweet chocolate malts as well. Flavor is extremely malt heavy and thick with some anise and oak. Alcohol is there at the end to give a minor burn. Ok for a small sample but the perfect beer to have on snowmageaddon 2011.

Bottle. Poured an extremely dark cloudy brown with a yellowish brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had notes of chocolate, dark bread and toffee with a bit of roastiness and alcohol underlying. Flavor began with dark bread, toffee and a hint of chocolate and had a bit of roastiness that came out in the finish.

Very dark brown beer with a red tinge. Opaque semi dry palate. Rich chocolately malt. Has an obvious aged feel. the hops have faded. Not complex.

Bottle. Pours a near clear brown with a slight red hue and a light brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma has notes of dark fruits with toffee and dark fruits with a hint of backing alcohol. Flavor starts with dark fruits but has a growing chocolate note with hints of smooth toffee in the finish.

Bottle. Poured a clear dark brown with a brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma was a combination of dark fruits, toffee, dark grains and a hint of caramel. Flavor began with toffee and chocolate and was joined by dark fruits and a hint of alcohol.

Very dark brown beer. Palate slightly dry. Malt dominated - smooth with chocolate and coffee. After 4.5 years the hops have died back - just a little hop bitterness at the end. A tasty malty beer!

Bouteille venant du sample pack 2010. Couleur cuivre, brune foncée. Mousse est fine et beige. Arôme ressort bien avec le whisky et se mélangeant au caramel et malt et cette combinaison domine le nez. En bouche, le tonneau est de suite présent suivi de malt grillé, note caramel, fine vanille et pas mal de chaleur venant du whisky. Il semble que le profile de houblon que je notais dans les autres bières de la série se soit atténué avec cette mise en tonneau. Le whisky laisse en bouche ce mélange chêne et whisky qui reste frais en bouche, quasi mentholé. Ma préférée de la série. C’est fou ce que une bière âgée en tonneau peu changer. Qcq notes épicées du bois, chocolat avec au fini une toute fine amertume.

Bouteille, part du vertical pack 2010 et aussi achetée en bouteille 22oz. Couleur acajou/brune foncée, mousse est crémeuse et épaisse un peu café au lait. Arôme est similaire aux autres versions avec notamment note de houblon, malt et caramel, fruité. Palais, nettement plus d’alcool, malt grillé caramel, un peu de moka et café avec des éléments de fruits noirs. La fin est nettement plus grillée avec du malt chocolaté, reste sèche et effervescente en bouche. L’alcool est bien réchauffant et laisse une fine couche de caramel et aspect sirop qui est collant aux lèvres. La bière garde un fini frais, peut-être de houblonné ou mentholé.

Bouteille, part du vertical pack 2010. Couleur acajou/cuivre, mousse est fine un peu café au lait. Pas trop de changement par rapport a la version ’9’ si ce n’est un malt et un houblon de plus. Au nez, arôme de malt, caramel et chocolat avec influence de pin/houblon. En bouche, on note de suite les 10%, malt avec un peu de chocolat amer allant un peu vers la réglisse. Aussi qcq notes de malt fumé, un peu sec en bouche avec une fin de chocolat amer et de fines notes de houblon donnant un aspect pin/citronné. En se réchauffant un peu, je note plus de café et un profile chocolat qui est épais en bouche. Pas mauvaise, mais au fini, ils auraient pu arrêter cette série bien avant la ’14’.
