Description
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.

Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

Bottled. Very dark amber colour, small brown head. Caramellish malty aroma with some fruity hints. Sweet caramel and sugary flavour with long hoppy finish. Well done. Alcohol also present, but fits in well. Chocolatish and fruitish hoppy aftertaste.

Pour is a dark brown with a small white head. Aroma is of malts and peat moss. Flavor is malty as well with lots datea and chocolate with a touch of butter scotch. Tasty and rewarding. Probably not as overwhelming of the sences like Jacobite but still has enough to make any beer geek excited.

Pour is a very muddy looking brown. Aroma is sweet and fruity with lots of dark fruit esters and toped off with a citrusy coriander. Flavor is very complex. Very sweet on the swallow and then the spices hit you. Coriander and a bit of dark plum rests on your tounge after the swallow. There is a lot more in here but i have not made up my mind as to what it is. A very nice but pricy beer experience. Every swallow is a different pleasure for the sences.

(Bottle 33 cl) Dark amber, almost brown. Almost no head. Surprisingly light body considering the alcohol. Weak notes of anise hiding somewhere. Dry hoppy palate. Lacks some body and character. 210505

2005 bottle at the Mondial, 6/4/05. Aroma of musty hay, honey and sweaty feet/gym shoes. Also a subtle boysenberry/blackberry note in there. Copper-red color, clear and filtered with a beige head, some retention and no lacing. Flavor of peppery spices, toasted grains, dry papery feel to it. Light caramel with touches of house yeast. Medium-light body. I’m betting something went wrong here between Scotland and Montreal.

Sample at the Mondiale 2005: Poured a medium brown color ale with medium head with limited retention. Aroma is quite sweet with some spicy notes and some nice malt. Taste is sweeter the expected with some honey. Body is average and carbonation is low. Average Scottish ale.

Bottle. Characteristic Traquair aroma. Clear chestnut colour. Small head. Quite bitter flavour. A little watery (naturally) in comparison with other Traquairs.
