Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, sea water notes, a bit like a ouster stout ! Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. A thick obsidian abyss of pure unadulterated alcohol. A bot overpowering, but very complex mixture of cherries and wood. Might mellow a bit with age.

Molasses, fig, charcoal, and black currant nose. Black, somewhat viscous pour, completely headless. Bloody mouthfeel. Vinous blackberry, currant, and oak. Sweet and sour with absolutely no bitterness on the front end. Lasting espresso, grass, and charcoal finish. Unusual timing of transitions. Decidedly fruity for the style. Very nice.

Bottle. Pours a dark and thick brown with just a little bit of tan head. There’s quite a bit of anise in the aromas, which is cool and I hope it comes out nicely in the flavor. There’s also a bit of cocoa and other roasty smells there. Flavor is nice... more dark fruit than I would have guessed from the nose and quite a bit of vanilla sweetness, too. I was hoping this would be a little more abrasive with licorice and peaty flavors... but it’s good this way, too.

Bottle - thanks dmschefke. A very dark brown pour with a thin, creamy beige head. Aroma is roasty and coffee filled, just a light amount of cocoa. Tastes mostly roasty, but the cocoa comes in a close second. Lingering roast and light coffee. Good.

@Pilsner Petes East Coast Gathering-hand bottled–pours a retaining tan head and dark brown with orange color. Aroma is dark malt-molasses, some wood/earthy hops. Taste is dark malt-anise, ashy, secondary earthy hops. Not my taste. Thanks dickinsonbeer/PAUL for sharing.

12oz bottle from Chevy Chase Wine. Pours a viscous, opaque, oily black with a lacing, creamy beige head. Strong licorice aroma, nutty, roasted malts, toast, coffee. Flavor is very nice. Brown sugar, caramel, chocolate, licorice, nuts, toast, booze, red grapes, dark fruits, plums, raisins, vanilla. Thick on the tongue, really transforms on the palate and hits every taste bud. Complex while still to the point.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a small very dark brown head that faded fairly quickly and produced some lacing. The aroma was toasty and had a chocolate syrup element with undertones of port wine and licorice. The flavor was dryish toasty malts and Baker’s chocolate, rum, licorice and wood. The finish was long, bitter, roasty and rummy with light chocolate on the finish. A bit boozy. The mouthfeel was fairly thick. Excellent. PS had this one on draft and found it to be rather lacking (overall score 3.7 for the draft)
