Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black. An inch of head quickly fades. Sweet chocolate aroma... Flavors of milk chocolates and dark chocolates, with a bit of a sweet caramel in the finish. Nice.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a ruby chestnut color with a medium sized khaki head. The aroma was sour, tangy caramel, molasses and ripe fruits. The flavor was sour, tangy and nutty with a slightly rancid caramel note and light fruity and floral hops. Something was off on the flavor of this one that did not work for me. Disappointing.

Had two pints of this on cask at Pizza Paradiso in Washington D.C. Pours a translucent, hazy, deep brown with ruby fringe and a creamy, lacing, white head. Nose is mostly bourbon but not in a bad way, oak, vanilla, light caramel, some light candy. Flavor was nice. Initially you get mostly bourbon, vanilla and wood but the beer sneaks in at the end with some caramel malts, a light nuttiness and some milk chocolate. Extremely smooth in the mouth and going down with a filminess that lasts in the mouth. This was a bit of a letdown, very thin and a little watery. Not bad, but not complex. I like my barrel aged beers to have some more depth.

Hand bottle shared by Dickinsonbeer at Peter’s NY gathering - chunky brown pour - soapy lace - nose of rum, brown sugar, cookie dough, cherries, oak, vanilla - tastes of bourbon barrel, cherries, coconut, caramelized sugar, spicy alcohol notes - honestly, this tastes like most of the stylistically ambiguous barrel-aged american ales I’ve ever had - not bad, but not great, either - it just tries to bludgeon your palate into liking it, with mixed results.

One 5oz sample of a 6 beer sampler at 3 son’s in Wexford, nice place. Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Supposedly by the DR owner. Smell is a little fruity but not volatile like most BWs. Looks somewhat like tea with a frothy head. No visible carbonation. Though you can tell this is a high alky brew, it does hide the 11% rather well. A little more polished than most BW’s. Some constant fruit in the background. This stuff is what it is; an on style barleywine. Perhaps a little more enjoyable than others. Seems to be a little more refined than most American barley and wheat wines I’ve had. Comes across like the grey area between euro and American BW styles. Appearance is very appealing and stacks up with the looks of any attractive brew. Coal black with a choco mousse head. Head fades after a while. Strong bitter and burned alky first taste impact. Rude and crude, it is what it is; a good on style impy stout. In yer face and burns a little when you swallow. A warm glow follows the brew into you hatch. Overall the aesthetics of this beer is quite appealing. Mild roasty charred flavors greet the palate. Not too much carbonation, but there is this creamy sensation. No head, just a tea froth. Nice earthy feel on the palate. Enjoyable fro a lager lover yet has some hop personality. Rather friendly at first then begins to morph into back of throat bitterness. No head just a tea froth. Not real bitter on the buds but does have a slight malt bitter impact. I found this beer rather easy to drink, without any rude attributes. Acceptable mild bitter finish. Bottle from the cooler-behind-the-cooler at Chuck’s Fine Wines. The beer pours nearly pitch black with a medium brown head that dissolves to a film eventually. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark chocolate covered raspberries and cherries plus a bit of coffee. Rich and smooth body with flavors of coffee, caramel malt and tart fruits. Nice chocolatey character throughout. The finish is moderately bitter coffee balanced by sweet malt. Very good, possibly the best Baltic Porter around.
