Well, this beer, at the very least, looks impressive - it pours pretty dark brown with an inch or two of tan head - good lacing - aroma is of lactose and little else - body and flavor are very thin - a bit too bitter - it kind of tastes like cola and black coffee mixed together, but less interesting and drinkable.

IPA? Hardly. Not even close to a traditional british IPA. This is an APA all the way - golden color, lots of floaties, decent lacing, though - clean hop aroma - crisp flavor, with about the standard level of hops for an APA - quenching in a way, but its blandness is ineffable - minimal malt presence - next please.

Lakeport version: light gold colour. Slight cereal aroma but little else. Cidery flavour, grainy, with a hint of malt. No hops anywhere to be found. Rather wet.

Light amber coloured body with a soapy off-white coloured head. Aroma of light malt, some spices and just about nothing else. Light-bodied; Sweet caramel taste with odd malt flavours. Aftertaste is very unpleasant and watery. Overall, another severly lacking beer in many key qualities from Saranac. I got this from an Adirondack 12 pack purchased at Harris Teeter in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia and sampled on 23-December-2003.

Dark reddish brown, medium lasting head. Strong caramelly aroma reminiscent of candy corn. Hard to detect any hops in the nose over the pungency of the caremels. Flavor is caramelly and roundly sweet, carried by a fair amount of carbonation. Finish is balanced, for its sweetness this beer is surpisingly savorable. Hints of roast develop. Additional notes on re-rate: aroma was very decadent, almost pure caramel and burnt sugar (brown sugar, molasses) and maybe even some vanilla but that could be imagination. Flavor sweet not cloying, but so decadent the whole glass was hard to finish.

I sampled the newer bottle labeled "Golden Pilsener". Still a bit confused by this, is it bottom-fermented pilsner or top-fermented American Wheat? I vote for the latter. Its a bright yellowish gold, full near creamy head. Herbal and spicy hop aroma. Light spicy hop flavor, little in the way of malt, light finish. Insufficient hops in the finish (for a pils, appropriate for a wheat), but nice hop flavorings and aromatics. Very light body. American Wheat Ale or Pilsener Lager?! I'm guessing a clean wheat ale with a little more than usual finishing hops. Decent enough, but labeling is as confusing as all get out.

Almost fruity, somewhat caramelized aroma. Dark gold, light head. Hint of grass in the nose. Nicely full (for a lager) palate, almost creamy with a pleasing carbonation. Sweet body, balanced finish. Overall, nicely clean with sweeter hints of caramel. A very pleasing lager - but keep it cool, as it warms it comes unbalanced.

Slightly hazy golden colour with orange highlights and a dense soapy white head. Aroma of coriander seed, blueberry, yeast, curacao and malt-the best Saranac beer i've smelt! Medium to Light-bodied; Sweet initial flavour of blueberries and coriander seed quickly making way to a malt background. Aftertaste clean-showing wheat and blueberries with a bit of curacao. Overall, a decent representation of the style-worth trying which is not always true with Saranac beers! I got this twelve ounce bottle from my sister's fiance, which he purchased at Harris Teeter in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia as part of the Winter 12 pack. I sampled this one on 27-November-2003.

Light gold, full foamy head. Grapefruit and peppery aroma with only light buttery malts in the nose. Soft mouthfeel with light appealing malt and medium peppery and citric hops. Medium balanced finish. More of an early 1990's IPA.

Deep dark garnet with large beige foaming head. Fresh caramel malt aroma with minimal grassy hops. Light bodied with crisp carbonation, somewhat sweet up front with caramel, a hint of chocolate. Lingering hoppy finish is nicely bitter. Strong carbonation gives it a bite that I feel, in the end, detracts from this drinkability of this beer. Fairly dry finish, consistent with its light body, it resembles a schwarzbier in these respects but lacks some of the malt and fermentation complexity.
