Description
In 1999 the brewery was established in the ''Commanderie van St. Jan'' in Nijmegen. This 12th century monastery has since been our production location and also the place where beer has been drunk most for years. In Brouwerscafé De Hemel, the 12 taps are always filled with different brewes from Hemel. Beer production takes place in the cellars of the Commanderie.

50 cL bottle. Pours cloudy deep orange/redish with with a huge off-white head. Swet fruity, light yeasty and vague milky aroma. Sweet malt flavoured with a distinct yeast presence, subdued smoke note. Vaguely spiced too. Somewhat citric and fruity into the finish. Very subdued metallic touch. Nicely lasting fruity touch into the finish alongside a mild phenolic note. Nice one.

Bottled fliptop, alc. 7.5 %. BB 04/2009. Clear amber color, small white head. Crystal sugary sweety aroma. Hoppy, alcoholic, a bit fruit sugary. Long harsh and caramelly aftertaste. Certainly tastes like a bock. Kind of watery and uninspiring.

Fliptop bottle 6,5 %. THT 31-03-2009. A bit hazy orange color, small cloudy off-white head. Berry-like aroma: rasberries, strawberries, grassy hops, a bit grainy. Fruity yeasty, a bit sweet berry flavor, grassy hops and spices in the aftertaste.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a small, off-white head that goes revealing a maple syrup colored body. Aroma is sweet with molasses, spruce, syrup, chestnuts, cinnamon, alcohol and raw malt. Taste is sweet with nuts, maple, slight bitterness at the finish. A little bit syrupy, low carbonation.

Tap @ BBF ’08. Clear dark amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of smoke, wood, some blue cheese. Flavour is smoky, bitter, a bit of caramel, like a German bock. Rather fullbodied. Very nice.

Bottle at the Angry Fist of Santa tasting at Chris_o’s. Love the aroma. 2005 bottle. Great barley wine, bit of heat in body. Actually it starts well but I went off it. Just too hot.

Draught, De Wildeman, Amsterdam. Didn’t realise this was 10%...no way I would have called that. Amber colour, with a decent whitey head. Caramel malt aroma with some berry fruit also. Quite sweet flavour but not cloyingly so; more fruit evident, with some spiciness. Thorougly enjoyable, complex stuff and has the whiff of real quality.
