Sweet, hoppy, with a fruit-laced malt center that grabs your tastebuds and makes sweet, sweet love to them. Finishes bitter and easy, begging you to take another sip. Awesome. (9/08)

Bottle. 200th imperial stout rating. Pours oily black. Tan head. Nose is roasted chocolate, mocha java, dark chocolate, vanilla and whiskey barrel. Taste is the same. Body is on the lighter side for an imperial, but the spot on taste and nose is really the driving force of this masterful brew.

Holy cow, I finally came across a smoked beer I can drink. The smoke only graces the finish, with a gentle touch on the malts as the beer fades, preventing any unwanted bongwater flavors. The rye gives nice depth to the beer’s center, providing a mild citric tang, while the hoppy finish coats the smoked fade with familiarity. Woody, tasty, and changes my opinion on a style of beer.

Pours a pale straw gold with a large, lace-leaving head, like a dictionary definition of what Beer should look like. Smells of a freshly filled grain bin, with a yeasty backbone and a tiny bit of corn. Tastes like a light beer made by someone who actually gives a damn, but that statement simplifies things greatly. The bubbly, bright texture keeps things moving quickly across your palate, while the bitter-but-soothing fade makes sure any overly sweet grainy notes are given a crucial balance. Gets bonus points because I’m a homer and I’m not really a huge Kolsch fan. But this beer might make me one. (5/2/09)

The only negative thing I can say about COAST Brewing is that they make me feel like a total homer. This beer truly ranks as amazing, one of the purest, best DIPAs I’ve tasted. Gorgeous pour, hazy brown-orange with a head that refuses to back down. The nose is all grapefruit and herbs and sticky, potent $200 weed. I’ve had DIPAs with killer looks and amazing aromas, but nothing has prepared me for the herbal, citric wonder that is Boy King. Malty sweetness starts things off, but quickly things submit to the massive Citra hops, bitter and lingering and bounteous in their presence. Finishes like a grapefruit honeybun consumed at the judges’ table at the Cannabis Cup. Firm, creamy, with no trace of the ABV, Boy King stuns me. Worth arranging a trip to Charleston that converges with the release date. As close to perfect as a DIPA can get. (4/23/09)

Pours pitch-black and super-thick, like a motor-oil milkshake. The smell shows unmistakable bourbon and oak, yet also keeps the mocha soul of the original intact. Bittersweet and boozy yet smooth and mellow, rolling layers of flavor keep sweeping across your tongue. The finish drips with Sour Mash Whisky, but only the smoothest, top-shelf bottle you can find. Blackbeerd is a sneaky sumbitch, wrapping its arms around you in a lovely stout embrace, all the while slipping hops into your glass when your back is turned. The beer undergoes a notable transition from dry to sweet as it warms, yet maintains a firm, bitter finish that turns the chocolate center into a smoky mocha fade. (That’s kind of fun to say: Smoky Mocha.) The alcohol tickles but doesn’t linger, making this pint disappear startlingly fast. Awesome stout. (2/10/09)

Once again, COAST makes me happy to be a Charlestonian. Rye Knot is an awesome brown ale, tossing in tons of rye to the normal mix of roasted malts and hoppy bitterness. The rye meshes well with the flavors of coffee and bitter chocolate, while the dry finish reasserts that this brew is indeed, first and foremost, a hoppy brown. Think of a smarter Dogfish India Brown. (12/2/08).
