Grain and tree bark nose. Cloudy brown, thin yellow head. Fudge flavor. Watery mouthfeel. Finishes grainy and husky, but sometimes I’m in the mood for that. Not so great, but it’s tolerable and different.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best by 4/2/2012. Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a good 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of caramel, toasted malt, biscuit, light chocolate, roasted nut, and maple syrup. Some decent aromas that are on the weak side. Taste of toasted malt, caramel, maple, roasted nut, and a touch of herbal hops. A surprising lack of flavor here, but it isn’t offensive. Really dry finish; but some lingering notes of caramel and maple for a few seconds. Light-medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Very drinkable as expected, with no alcohol noticed at all as expected for 4.5%. Some good flavor balance for what is present. Overall this is an ok beer. Not offensive by any means, but it really is lacking in the flavor department. I wanted it to be much more robust than what was offered.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a super dense, seven centimetre tall light brown frothy head that lasts indefinitely. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, coffee, licorice, rye and quite a bit of grapefruity hops. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep rye and strong malt flavour with a lot of pungent and grassy hops capped off with a strong, yet flavourful sweet caramel finish. Aftertaste shows a good balance of hops and malt, some alcohol notes, a little licorice and a good, somewhat strong black ipa. Overall, a nice beer for the style with the twist of using rye as the malt which makes for a much richer black ipa, but the balance (extra hops) is still spot on. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Manassas, Virginia on 19-January-2012 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washingtonon 15-February-2012.
