Bottle: Beautiful appearance; hazy light golden/straw color with a finger of creamy off-white head. Fruity, yeast, earthy florals, and a light tartness make up the aroma. Loses most of the pizaz in the flavor; still a little tart, but much less of the earthy bits and fruity tones. Mostly yeast, really. I was almost convinced Tommyknocker had done something special here...

Pours a dark brown more akin to a port or nut brown ale. Smallish head. Aroma of hops and roasted grain. Flavor is a nice combination of hop bite and roasted malts and grains. Fairly smooth finish--not overly bitter.

Pours a rather hazy copper-yellow. Little to no head--quickly dissipates. Aroma is one of rather muted hops. Flavor is a good, basic citrus/bitter pine hops combination, though there is just a bit of a chemically aftertaste. Not terrible, but not all that great either.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best by Jan 23, 2012. Pours crystal clear dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention that reduces to a thick cap that lasts. Some nice soapy lacing on the glass as well. Aromas of caramel, grapefruit, pine resin, orange, chocolate, roasted malt, rye, bread, and some spicy hops. Nice and fairly well balanced aromas. Taste of huge caramel, biscuit, chocolate, rye, roasted malt, grapefruit, orange, pine, and spicy hops. Nice amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of rye, biscuit, chocolate, roasted malt, and spicy hops on the finish for a bit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very nice creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Good balance of roasted malt presence and hop bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Very smooth drinking. Overall a damn nice black IPA. Great roasted malt flavor presence with a nice amount of hoppiness as well.

Smells uber-sweet with hints of soy sauce and Beggin’ Strips, tastes like you’re sitting in a bag of caramel malt. The oak adds depth to the sweetness, but really what we need is something to tighten up all the cloying sugariness that saturates this bottle. No noticeable alcohol, which is nice, but the watery texture proves too tame. Big mess here, fellas.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a very dark brown with about a finger of tan head. Strong aroma of coffee with a good bit of chocolate and vanilla. Taste is light bitter. Strongly coffee with a bit of vanilla. Light bodied with a thin watery texture. Soft carbonation and a decent coffee finish. Overall, it’s ok. It almost seems like they had a decent porter then cut it with a bunch of water. I probably won’t be buying this again.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 11/20/11
Aroma: The is all berry fruitiness, raspberry seems to be the most prevalent
Appearance: It pours a pink-orange color with a small, fizzy, off-white head
Flavor: The taste is heavy sweet, with, like the nose, lots of sugary berry fruitiness
Palate: The mouthfeel is sticky/sugary, nearly cloying, and the carbonation is soft, almost flat
Overall Impression: This is a fruit beer pure and simple. It achieves that goal. It seems others found more complexity, but I did not. I didn't get any sour or tart flavors, just sweet berries. It drinks pretty easily, but it leans cloying on the aftertaste. Not terrible, but too one-dimensionally sweet for my palate.
