Description
McMullens was founded in 1827 by Peter McMullen and since then we have continued brewing in Hertford without a break. The heritage of AK, for example, can be traced back to 1833. We have protected the company’s brewing history throughout that time by acquiring and investing in the public houses. Our pubs are run by our managers or business partners and provide an exclusive market for our beers. To this day, the McMullen family remains firmly committed to our beers because they act as the ‘flag’ for our business.

500ml Bottle: BBD end of Aug 2013, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 4th Aug 2013, at home. Ruddy brown body with a good, full head of tan coloured foam. The nose is of dark fruits and malty molasses. The taste is moist fruit cake and extra sweet malts with a mild liquorice undertone. Rich and heavy in the body, hides the alcohol nicely: this is an armchair and coal fire sort of brew, a Winter Warmer!

Bottle shared at the ChrisO Flags of Many Nations Easter Tasting 2013 - London. I believe this beer was pulled from ChrisO’s cellar. Pours clear gold with a fine, white cream cap. Well aged bready malt nose, caramel, old fruits. Light sweet flavor with fine and faded caramel and toffee, light leathery berries. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately sweet to finish with sugary bread, toffee. Definitely some oxidation but still not an altogether bad beer.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 7/5/2013. Amber with a decent, off-white head. A fruity beer, with decent malts, some hedgerow hops and a decent, bitter finish. As others have noted, a straight down the middle beer.

Appearance: Deep golden color with a small white head that leaves some lacing.
Aroma: Caramel malty and light floral hoppy.
Palate: Light body. Moderate sweet and a light bitterness. Soft carbonation.
Taste: Thin caramel malty with some fruity and hoppy notes.
Overall impression: Way to thin body. Could have been a nice ale.
Personal stats: Handpull at The Woolpack (McMullens) in Hertford, England.
