Established in 1830
The origin of the brewery and distillery Gebr. Sünner was located in Cologne-Deutz. Today it is the oldest Kölsch brewery in the world and has been owned by the Sünner family since 1830. The origins go back to a small house brewery called "Zum Schiffgen" with a distillery and taproom. In 1846 the brewery moved to the current premises in Cologne-Kalk. With Astrid Schmitz-DuMont, the sixth generation of the Sünner family has taken over the management of the brewery and continues the tradition of the family-owned brewery and distillery.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a small fading white head over a clear golden body. Aroma of grass, corn, hay and cereal. Taste is metallic with soggy malts and corn. Not good. Thin body and medium carbonation.
in further re-rates, there has been an unpleasant sweetness and green apple flavor. It would lower the score further, but I will keep the original score.

Very pale sunburnt straw hue with white head that instantly dissipates. Little carbonation and no sediment, resulting in a completely crystal clear appearance.Mmmm... very lager-y, with 1 dimensional grainy malt. Also the cardboard aroma that seems to be prevalent in beers that use hops extract. A slightly sweet white wine-like character is noticeable upon further inspection. Would have liked more fruit.Wow - taste is pretty damn refreshing. Sweet bready malt, with very short-lasting bitterness. Slight white wine. Very short duration. Look up ’delicate’ in the dictionary and there’ll be a picture of this beer there.Very light body, with low carbonation (would have expected more from a kolsch.Sooooooooo refreshing! Especially considering its 28deg C inside at the moment!

The bottle looks good, the beer in the glass also. Starts modest fruity and yeasty, not too dry or sourish. The finish is a bit moldy, but still well balanced. Normal hefeweizen!

Draught at the brewery’s tap in Cologne. Weak chalky aroma. Clear yellow colour. Small stable white head. The flavour is subtle as is to be expected. Good fresh white bread notes. Some slightly sweet light malts. Very well-balanced and, above all, clean. Perhaps a hint of chalk in the finish, which is also good.

From Sunner kolsch house in Koln. Least impressive of the 5 kolsches I had over lunchtime. Pale gold, thin lasting white head. Very light in flavour, bit of cream. Bit dusty/stale on aroma, not as fresh as the Fruh or Sion or Pfaffen. Disappears in mouth. NOt very hoppy on end. Little bit of faint sting.

Bottle that I picked up from the Dodgi’ Dei’ Cowley Rd, Oxford Nov 2008. Soft golden appearance with white bubbly head. Pleasant tasting beer, very easy drinking, some soft vanilla flavour’s, bit sweet and grainy, maybe should have had a little cooler but very nice all the same.
