Bottle from Toby. Musty and leathery, tannic and bitter. Dry and gritty. At it's core a solid barleywine, but got a bit musty with age.

From Aug 2008

I got this bottle in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!

A nice close to pitch black in colour with an inch of tan foam. That soon disappears barely leaving even a ring around the glass.

The smell has notes of roasted malt, some caramel and some fruit.

The taste has a good robust roastiness up front, with mild coffee and more noticeable chocolate, both milk and bitter. Nice flavour here. The sweet and the bitter are very balanced and it's no chore to take sip after sip.

Mouthfeel borders on medium, the carbonation also borders on medium, it finishes with a good dark chocolate bitterness that is long lasting. A nice brew and the 9%abv is very well hidden.

Well, this is my first Stoudt's brew that I'm reviewing and I think I'll try to find some more of their "stuff" in the future.

From Aug 2007

I got this in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks, John!

Pours from 12oz bottle a hazy medium gold with a small head of foam that during the session, shrunk to some spotting with some lacing.

The smell is hoppy with notes of grapefruit and some grass.

The taste is pretty big on the grass on the first sip with a good malt backbone that balances it out well. After a few more sips, the hops calm down a bit and there's more of the balanced flavour going on until the finish where it ends up slightly bitter with a short aftertaste. When I swish this APA in my mouth, the most dominant flavour is the malt that takes an earthy route. Pretty good APA in my book and I'd drink it again, no problem.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Andover Liquors. Appearance is clear amber with decent sparkle, finger-width foamy beige head with fair retention and no lacing. Aroma is candied sugar, fruit, dank earth. Taste is as aroma, with light caramel. Palate is medium bodied with thick texture, soft carbonation and mix of sweet and bitter finish. Overall, maltiness that seems more a propos for an APA and the mix of dank earth and sugary sweetness is not a favorite of mine.

From old tasting notes. Yellow gold color with a huge white head. Nice small bubbles. Light malt aroma . Sweet malt flavor upfront dissipating to a spicy hoppy entanglement of flavor. Light clinging hop aftertaste. Though lacking in complexity, it entices and pleases with a robust character.m

From old tasting notes. Bright Amber orange color. Creamy beige head. Spicy toasted malt nose. Bittersweet malt profile with hints of honey and cloves. Sharp bitter finish casts a nice balance. Full bodied and flavorful with an accent on the hops.
