Half pint, cask ale, shared with Finn at Penderel's Oak. Wetherspoon Beer Festival, March 24. A covering beige head over a mahogany coloured body, fair lacing. Caramel moments on the nose, hints of spices, promising. Mixed taste of caramel malts, biscuit, and leafy hops. Lightly spiced bitter finish. Decent. (London, 16.03.2024).

Pours a clear dark amber colour with a small off-white head that settled to a thin film. Aroma is earthy and nutty with some light caramel notes. A dry mouthfeel, a malty and bitter taste, malty, nutty and earthy flavours with a moderate bitterness.

Rare to see a new Cairngorm! Cask at Archibald Simpsons, Aberdeen. It pours clear brown with a thick, fluffy beige head. The aroma is nutty, varnished wood, toffee, caramel, brown bread, honeyed grain and some fruit cake. The taste is firmly dry, bitter, nutty, sweet caramel & toffee, wood tannin, twiggy, earthy, dried fruits and some spice with lingering bitter, woody finish. Average body and moderate, fluffy cask carbonation. Fairly robust stuff. Not bad.

Cask at Square Bottle, Chester. Pours a dark chestnut with a sizeable cream head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma, plus some hints of autumn fruits. Malts again in the mouth, though with some underlying bitterness. Restrained flavour of biscuits and caramel, but with hints of hops, herbs and ginger coming through later. Finish is dry and slightly bitter. It’s reasonable enough.

Cask at the Shakespeare's Head Spoons. Last of the cask. Clear amber beer, good bubbly cream colour head. Airy palate, semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Light smooth malts, a little cream and a little caramel. Modest floral hoppage. A little ripe citrus. Light and semi dry finish. Fine. Drinkable but mellow to the point of boredom and beyond.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Nice copper colour with a beige head and a middling fizz. Minerals and twigs up front, a little sweet toffee cake and digestive biscuit behind. The minerals are a bit too prominent. Sub-par.
