Can. Opaque, dark brown pour witha dense, creamy and stick-to-the-sides-of-the-glass beige head. Dark malts, faint roast in the aroma, with some light caramel and lactic sugars. Very sweet flavor, prunes and light char, plenty more lactic sweetness, not much bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish, perhaps too much sugar, really, with not enough roasty bitterness. Altogether not that bad.

50cl Can at my girlfriend’s grandparents’ house. I was quite shocked they offered this when I asked for a beer. Deep golden colour, bubbley white head. Aroma of fruity esters, alcohol, sweet, caramel. Flavour is sweet, light malty, fruity, alcohol, light bitter alcoholic finish. Light to medium bodied. Not bad, no real nasty flavours. Not good as well.

From the jug @ Star Inn, Bath. Rich golden-amber colour. Toasty, lightly caramelly aroma. Toasty character is very Bass-like (the bottle we foreigners are most familiar with) but there is more lively fruitiness to it as well. This has great appeal. Will probably re-visit for more gravity Bass.

[Gravity cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading] Amber. Tastes of green leaves and wee wee, with a fair amount of bitterness. Reminded me strongly of Wadworth’s Henry’s IPA, and just as unpleasant.

Cask at the Regal (JDW), Cambridge. Amber with a ring of white head; straightforward fruity aroma; thin and watery with some sweet malts; and a light herbal bitter finish. Rather ordinary.

Cask handpump at The Penny Black, Bicester, JDW 10-04-10 with Craig & family Pours amber with a thin white head & credit where it’s due this looked in very good nick. This is a bit thin and watery, but there is a light hoppy presence, slight bitterness and this is a better temperature than some of the others. A steady, easy drinking beer but again I’m not that impressed. A6 A5 F6 P3 Ov11 3.1
