Description
Craft beer in its purest form is what Sebastian Sauer, the head behind Freigeist beer culture, produces. Sebastian is known among experts as one of the first craft beer brewers in Germany. True or not, he's a veteran in the craft beer scene and an expert who is second to none. It's not for nothing that his beers are more popular than any other German beer in the USA, the home of craft beer.
Free spirit beer culture is conquering the craft beer world with the salvation of old, long-forgotten beer styles. Sebastian reads himself into the matter until he has found out all the ingredients of the original recipe and the subtleties and secrets of the old brewing style. With this knowledge, he then ponders how the beer would be brewed these days and what ingredients would be used. He doesn't want to bring old camels out of grandma's handbag to the light of day, but rather to transport the beers of the past with skill and expertise into the present. His beers are therefore not just reproductions of old recipes, but rather modern new editions. With this concept, the brewery has made a good name for itself in the craft beer scene and attracted international attention.

At ACBF 2011. Dark brown no head. Too salty sherbert for me. Again different to your average German beer.

At ACBF 2011. Cloudy brown colour. Perfumed hop aroma. Itβs pretty decent, hop, toffee, lavender on finish. Itβs got some perpper. Hoppy as hell. Interesting.

At ACBF 2011. Coffee choc on aroma. Sourness in mouth takes you blindside. Completely unexpected you canβt tell what you;ll get from the aroma. Way way too unexpected. Cool and itβs German.

At ACBF 2011. Vanilla aroma. But good vanilla. Bit like a red wine on the aroma. Some toffee. I quite liked it. Good balance, vanilla worked well.

At ACBF 2011. Smoky aroma. Smoke works well over a malty brown ale. Dry. Good.

Bottled, thanks whoever left this in my fridge! Near black, no head. Aroma of salty licorice and apple. Sweet and syrupy with notes of metal and apples. Harsh and tinny with salty finish. Very unpolished.

37,5 cl bottle @ home, BBE 06/2012
Aroma is surprisingly light with vanilla, toffee and oak. Kind of reminds me of a light British stout. Flavour is bitter and tart in a harsh way. It has burned malt, really dark chocolate and lactic acid. Way too burned and bitter β just like the original Caulfield.

375 cl bottle @ home β purchased from Alvinne shop β poured into a mini-cognac snifter & consumed along with a Rafael Gonzalez M. Coronas Extra cigar β very dark mahogany chestnut brown with a non-lasting mocha/desert head β smells rather sweet slight cough syrup & maple syrup dark malts, cinnamon & winter spices, touch dark fruits & booze β lots of prunes upfront, very syrupy, very heavy prunes, caramel, touch cough syrup & plenty of maple syrup, thick liquorish & brown sugar, intensity rises in the aftertaste, very thick almost pudding like, syrup with a touch of dark chocolate, strong sweet spices & hint of dark bread and slightest trace of smoke underneath β warming β body is thick & syrup-like with low carb. β wonderful prune syrup winter beer & definitely not your average stout
