Description
In 1981, Peter Mauldon, the great grandson of Anna Maria decided to re-establish the family tradition and start a brewery in Sudbury once again. Peter had been too young to be involved in the original family business and had previously pursued a career with Messrs. Watney where he progressed to Head Brewer at the company’s large Mortlake Brewery.

Bottle from the Ipswich Coop. Pours an attractive amber brown with a ruby tint and a nice sized creamy off-white to beige head. Aroma of malt, toffee, nut, dark fruit, and light winter spice. Medium plus sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium to full bodied, oily texture, average carbonation. Enjoyed this, a very good winter seasonal.

500ml bottle [from a trade with Grumbo - thanks Graham!]. Clear, ruby-brown colour with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Weak, malty aroma, cautious hints of toffee, a touch of hazelnut, unspecific fruity hoppy overtones. Taste is dry, toasty, nutty and earthy malty, hints of Brazil nut, hazelnut, subtle sweetness, bitter hoppy overtones.

Cask at Weatherspoons, Eastbourne. A bit of a mess, synthetic berry taste within a porter. At times drinkable, otherwise, naaaaaat.

Cask at Tilly Shilling, Farnborough. Scent of Ribena. A dark reddish brown. Initial frothy beige head soon dissipates. Light bitter with an odd tang. Blackberries are there but... Light bodied. Light bodied. Slick. Drinkable but insubstantial. Weak porter with added Ribena... possibly Light.

Cask at the Booking Office. Pours clear dark red-brown with no head. Strong blackberry aromas, faint chocolate. Taste doesn’t really live up to the promise of the nose. Bit thin, light roast and fruit.
