Description
In 1981, Peter Mauldon, the great grandson of Anna Maria decided to re-establish the family tradition and start a brewery in Sudbury once again. Peter had been too young to be involved in the original family business and had previously pursued a career with Messrs. Watney where he progressed to Head Brewer at the company’s large Mortlake Brewery.

Cask-conditioned at the V Shed (JDW), Bristol 5/12/2022. Amber in colour, with a lacy, off-white, head. Earthy malts, some nut and spice character, leafy hops, berries and a moderately bitter finish. Good.

Cask at Moon under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours a dark copper with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. Malts are to the fore in the aroma, along with some traces of autumn fruitd. In the mouth it starts off smooth with sweet malts before becoming fairly bitter with traditional hops and hints of ginger. Fruitiness returns in the finish. This is a pretty solid beer – but I would call it a “red ale” not a best bitter.

500ml bottle: BBE June 2023. Drank at home on 19th July 2022. Chestnut reddy brown colour, clean and clear, on top an off-white crown. Nose is slightly caramel and mildly fruity, taste similar, not unpleasant, but all a bit subdued and subtle within a fairly watery body depth, even for a Cooking Bitter at 3.8%.

330ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - cheers!]. Opalescent, orange golden colour with small to average, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Herbal-spicy, leafy and fruity hoppy aroma, biscuity and spicy, pale malty background, hints of speculoos, gooseberry, a touch of kiwi fruit, whiffs of woodruff. Taste is fruity, and herbal-spicy hoppy, biscuity and minimally spicy, pale malty with subtle residual sweetness, hints of speculoos, some woodruff, gooseberry, a touch of mint and kiwi fruit. Oily texture, smooth, soft and silky, simultaneously minimally dry palate, fine, soft carbonation. Balanced, harmonious, refreshing - deserves way more attention.
