[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading.] A dark ruby red pour with a tight cream coloured head; aroma of coffee and earthy malts; dry malty body with traces of licorice and black treacle; and a nutty finish. A tasty stout.

Cask at Standing Order, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small off-white head. Not much of an aroma – just vaguely caramel. In the mouth it is initially sharp and sour but then becomes quite sweet with liquorice to the fore. Malts and dark fruits are there too, with hints of milky coffee. Finish is sweet and fruity. Quite nice, but a bit strange.

Bottle from Warwick Real Ale. Appearance - golden amber with a fluffy white head. Nose - pine, herbs, lightly soapy and just a hint of caramel. Taste - caramel and lavender. Palate - light bodied, a bit sweeter on the finish than ideal. Overall - ok.

500ml bottle: BBE Nov 2021. Opened at home on 1st Nov 2020. Clear and clean bright amber body, wispy white top. Aroma and taste dominated by caramel/toffee flavours, slightly singed maybe. Mild citrus hop balance, but malty molasses rule this pleasant brew. --- Beer merged from original tick of O'Hanlon's Stormstay on 03 Aug 2014 at 13:29 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 7. Original review text: Hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoon pub on 2nd Aug 2014. An off-white head sat on top of a chestnut/amber body. Light malty lead in to both the nose and taste. An unwanted (by me anyway) citrus note arrives once the semi-sweet maltiness fades mid-sip giving the beer a drying and hoppy finish. I still enjoyed the beer but it didn’t need the Amarillo hops in my opinion.
