New Kestemont fruit lambic, a grape lambic made with Montepulciano grapes; 37,5 cl corked bottle from Huis van de Geuze shared with tderoeck and Meeki. Pale pinkish-white, moussey, opening and eventually dissolving head on a misty burgundy red robe with deep purple tinge. Aroma of indeed Montepulciano but more in the form of grape juice than wine (though a wine-like impression is certainly there), grape leaves, lingonberries, lemon pith, old dry wood, grape skin, dust, red apple (quite strong), oxidized old rosé wine. Tart, juicy onset, very grape-juicy again but in a tart way, lots of red apple, red plum and redcurrant impressions, blending in with a sour-fruit-yoghurty effect running through a moderately carbonated (at least for a bottled lambic), supple and eventually vinous body; layers of tart, drying red fruit continue, over a bready backbone and dried by woody tannins, but also by grape skin and grape seed tannins. Long vinous finish though, not overly dry and maintaining juiciness - but also becoming more and more vinous and connecting all the flavours well. Kestemont is still learning the trade and some of their earlier fruit lambics failed to impress me, but this is one fine grape lambic indeed - in fact it is probably the finest fruit lambic in general that has come out of Kestemont's operations so far, at least for me. Very accomplished, better than expected even (not that my expectations were necessarily low in this case) - too bad that there have been so disproportionally many overwhelming grape lambics around in recent years by the likes of Cantillon and 3 Fonteinen, so to say that competition is stiff in this field, is definitely an understatement...

Bottle. Color: Hazy pinkish red, fast diminishing pink head. Aroma: Berries, blackberry, cherry, funky hints. Taste: Fruity mix of gooseberry, blackberry and cherries. Oak wood and subtle rural funk. Lightly oily mouthfeel. Wheat malt base. Just ovet medium body, below average carbonation. Moderate tartness. Quite nice, although feeling a bit young.

Bottle from Geers. Lot 20220801. Clear golden, no head. Aroma of grape must, horseblanket, wet hay, gooseberry, cheese, damp cellar, green apple. Taste has sour green apple, rhubarb & grapes in a sourdoughy malt body surrounded by funky notes of leather, hay & cheese. Tart grape in the finish, woody tannins (oak, grape skin), some stone fruit and hay. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Nice balance between fruit & funk (damp almost).

No head whatsoever; almost clear, metallic-red beer. End of bottle solid deposit. Old raspberry beer (smells/tastes very much like the Boon Framboise from 30-40 years ago). Fine raspberry liqueur. Quite acidic, real fruit, raspberries. I cannot trace cherries (often mixed in). Wheat (and -slickness), not much farmyard references. Lipsmacking acidity, acidburn and -thinning, some wheatslickness. Despite being headless, feels well-carbonated. Nice framboos, good!

Draft at Grote Dorst. It pours crystal clear like apple juice with a few bubbles on the cap, . The aroma is musty, sweaty, barnyard, some orchard fruits, woody, earthy, spicy, white wine vinegar and gooseberry. The taste is quite smooth, musty, damp basement, dull bitterness, barnyard, spicy, leafy, gooseberry, white currant, cheap white wine, deep bretty funk, some minerality and leather with a drying, damp leafy finish. Flat and slightly oily in the mouth. Pleasing texture to it. Quite an interesting unblended.

Small pink head over reddish, faintly veiled terra cotta beer. Fruity, whiff of acetic acid, fruitacid; farmyard. Red fruit/berries, hint of pomegranate (?), cassis and mould. Lambic - Kestemont again! - very subdued, as if diluted with some very neutral beer or with Meerts? Acidthinning, light -burn, refreshing, fruity character. Typical Kestemont. And then Mannekes , OK, Vaccinium corymbosum of Amerikaanse blauwbes wordt vaak blauwe bes genoemd.

Small whitish rim over orange to terra cotta beer, veiled. Very fruity, but also grassy, farmyard, horseblanket. Dark fruit - could be blackberries, could be plums, could be dark grapes. Ultra dry and tart, fruity, bit vinous. Again fruity, if impossible to say what fruit served blind. Acidthinning, lipsmacking acidity, well-carbonated - if not visually - , refreshing. Delicate and vinous, but it isn't an all-powerful fruitlambic.
