Description
Founder Tsjomme Zijlstra's idea to start his own brewery came to him after his time in England. He started to brew his own beer at home and decided in 2014 that he wanted go bigger. He met Menno and John, owners of Brouwerij de Molen in Bodegraven, and told them his story. They taught him how to brew with one of their old brewing installations. Kaapse Brouwers was born.
We are Kaapse Brouwers. We are the brewers who introduced craft beer to Rotterdam, and Rotterdam to the world. With our Kaapse recipes we brew non-conformist beers. We choose for bold recipes and love to experiment with different flavors to create contemporary craft beers.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from some online shop. Best before December 2018. Pours deep, deep amber with a frothy, tan head. Super old school IPA, lots of toasted caramel, toasted brown bread, some pine, ripening citrus fruits, light grassy bitterness. Medium bodied, lightly oily, with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, plenty of resin, some bitter gooey pine, more caramel and ample bready malts, oranges. This is a true novelty these days. Has aged quite nicely, too. Overall, I really enjoyed.

Bottle at home in Hackney - may have picked up at Kris Wines, but can't be sure. Vintage 2014. Pours deep brown with a thin, creamy tan head. Fairly sweet, lots of sugary chocolate that contrasts with fairly strong ashy bitterness. Side notes of burnt caramel, vanilla. Full bodied with delicate carbonation. Finishes with nips of alcohol warmth, more bitter ash, scorched earth, cocoa. Not bad.

Bottle. Almost black, opague. Caramel, roast and cereals in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor, oaky with licorice and laurel. Caramel. Vanilla. Couldn’t taste the rhum, the beer is too rich for that, Full bodied, smooth, slightly alcoholic. Nice.

Tap at 1st Anniversary Kaapse Brouwers Festival. Peat and dark chocolate in the aroma. Very low on carbon, full bodied. Ash, peat, malt, chocolate and soft vinous and raisinny notes in the flavor. Not oozing complexity, but I simply love this beer.
