Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Bottle with a yellowish tinted label. Pours with. After seeing some other Hanssens destroy their corks, I would say that this is a newer bottle. Pours a hazed gold with a minimal white head. Aroma from a far is damp forest, cheese, lemon soak wood, and upon closer inspection dirty socks, lemon, various herbs and spices, horse. On the funkier rather than the sour side of Gueuzes sour wise. Floral and earthy as it warms. Taste is sour with tons of lacto, pineapple, and a bit of wood. A bit of lemon rind sourness. Light in both wood and fruitiness. Stomach acid similar to other Hanssens lambics. Some what creamy carbonation for a lambic. Sour mouthpuckering mouthfeel.

Also had to try a bottle estimated to be around 50 years old. Flat, but with a rich funk and acidity that held up shockingly well over the years.

Bottle. Pours with a frothy pink head over a muddy pink body. Aroma of red wine, sour dark cherries, funk, apple, acetone, vanilla tannins, and pineapple. Taste is good and sour with some horse hair and a bit of sweet dark cherry pie ending with a bit of nail polish and a touch of formaldehyde. Ultra acidic, with straight lacto like stomach acid and a bit of ripe cherry. Super dry mouthfeel light but lively carbonation. Excellent, but I wonder if I could dissolve metal with this.

2000 Bottle I think, at least thats what the label says. Minimal hiss from the cork. Near clear gold with no head at all. Aroma of cork, funk, dried up strawberries, and wet autumn leaves. Taste is sour and cellary with some nice sweet’n’sour strawberry and honey notes, with lemony sour wild yeast citrus. Very nice. Near still mouthfeel, which is not really what I want.

clear red, no head aroma is nail polish remover, framboise, faint citrus. too much nail polish remover flavor is too much nail polish remover, then cherries, very very dry, beneath the gentle sweetness is a very strong acid flavor, that can be felt more than it can be tasted. you’ll notice it in the throat after swallowing it.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin reddish head. The aroma has notes of black currant, acetone, wood, and brettanomyces. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of black currant juice and brettanomyces, and with an acidity hitting late and burning in the top of the throat. Huge thanks to KimJohansen for sharing.

Pours ruby into a tumbler. Pink head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sour cherry and funk aromas. Dry and tart with cherries and sour lactic funk that lasts through the finish.
