Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

(Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm, 17 June 2009) Cloudy copper colour with brief head. Fruity, tart nose with strawberries and dusty hints of stable. Fruity, tart taste with notes of strawberries, horse blanket, stable and cloudberries. Solid, dry acidity throughout with a decent fruit character. Dry, harsh, tart and very tasty. Excellent beer!

Deep bloody body. Pits, yoghurt and light cherry flesh in the nose. Some light phenolic character. Sweet and sour body but finishes fairly puckering. Very lively on the palate with a vibrant character and the way it turns sour at the end is awesome.

Bottle (2000 - 9 years old). Ap: Golden amber. No head. Looks funky. Ar: Sweet actually, some kind of sour bitterness (vineager maybe). Fla: Sour red berries. Incredible fruity. No real tartness in the finish, some kind of bitterness though. Ov: Quite sophisticated. Not as funky as one would think (maybe due to the ageing).

Bottled@Fonefan. Ruby red colour, not much head. Aroma is raspberry with very brutally sour notes. Floavour is extremely brutal dry, tart and sour raspberries along with dry wood. Extremely brutal bier, even though not that "complex".’kin hell, Warning: this beer will ruin your palate for the rest of the evening. Good thing this was the last beer at Fonefan for this visit.

Golden with a slight haze. Slightly footy, with pear accents. Tart and lemony, also slightly leathery and dusty. Thoroughly delicious and refreshing.

Flat-looking orangey-pinkish-red. The aroma at first bursts with fruit then fades into pure hanssens cheese and lots of wood character. Flat body. Light tartness and raspberry character with hints of vinegar. It’s ok, but doesn’t really have much complexity. Promises a lot with the aroma but doesn’t really deliver on either of the times I’ve tasted it.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin rim of beige head. The aroma has notes of acetone, raspberries, nuts, vinegar, brettanomyces, and horse blanket. The flavor has sweet notes of raspberries in the mouth, while the acidity first hits in the throat, also with notes of vinegar, leading to a tart fruity finish. The mouthfeel is flat. Huge thanks to KimJohansen for sharing.
