Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Rerating for the bottled product. Disparate head over faintly hazy pale terracotta beer. Fine raspberry, faintly lemony, barnyard nose. Fine, sour, acidic raspberries, lactic acid, lemon. Long-lasting sour fruitflavours. Gets really acidic in the end. Lipsmacking acidity, acidthinning, still a bit sticky fruit-filling, good! Excellent raspberry beer, not one for the fainthearted. Draught No head, beautiful clear garnet-red beer. Acetic acid, old acids, some oxydation signs, fruitvinegar. Short sweet-artificial start, overlying harsh acetic and fruitacids in the mouth. Pukering acidburn, light body, even the fruitsensation gone. True to tell, this is more dressing for a salad platter than a beer to drink.

Draught Dark deep burgundy; no head. Acetic acid, fruity aromas. Even more acids in the taste, with quite some aceitc again, plus the necessary fruitacids. Astringent and fiery acidburn. In the aftertaste, I get speculoos (hard gingerbread), which I’m linking more and more with sweetener. Still rewarding, but certainly not for the fainthearted. "Azijnsteek" is unmistakable.

Pours dark opaque grapefruit – puke in color with no head. The aroma is very berry fruity like with a mild layer of tartness just under the surface. The taste is bug and tart up front with hints of berryness. The nose didn’t lead on that this was going to taste as tart as it does. It ends with more and more tartness without being overwhelmingly tart.

I was able to sample this on cask at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore during Max’s Belgian fest. Pours a clear amber, orange with absolutely zero head and very little visible carbonation. Aroma of sweet tarts, oranges and wood. Flavor is very similar, orange, wood pulp, sweet and tart, yeasty with some flavor of white grapes. Very even and clean on the palate and just a touch syrupy. One of my favorites of the day.

FRO throwdown: Awesome appearance at the tasting! Cloudy purple. Funky berries and green tomato vine plus spearmint that I always get from cassis. Low carbonation, mildly sour, more restrained acidity compared to other Hanssens I’ve had. Flavor features more spearmint and fruit.

Sample at O-town throwdown ’09 pours ruby with no head. Aroma black currants with light tartness. Taste, same as aroma, black currants profile followed by big sourness and tartness finish. Good stuff, like all their other beers.

courtesy of Tony @ OTH. Pours clear golden/blond, still. Aroma loaded with funk and nice strawberry. Taste, light notes of the strawberry, light tartness of the palate, reminiscent of acidic notes of strawberries. Low carbonation with some oxidation. Remains sweet with enjoyable tart finish.
