Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.
Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Notes from April 2009 Champagne-sized variety. Pours out a dull pink, but settles into my tulip a sherry vinegar-like color. Murky. A good spritz of off-white head dies & lingers around the edges. Smells of strawberries & sweat at first, eventually becoming the imitation sugar-laden cherry syrup that gets oozed over your Carvel sundae. Tail end is acrid wood & burnt sugar. A notion of turned wine at first, it is immediately replaced with a nice, only slightly offensive pucker that is similar to old white grapefruit juice. Lightly caramelized sugar fills in just before an idea of cherry pits, cork, & what seems like apricot. The finish is tart & dry with vinegar & bread crust. Carbonation is mild, but whips up the acid at the end. Feel is slightly, slightly, yeasty. Overall, not too memorable, if only that I rarely make work of a 750 of anything but cheap champagne. Drinkability suffers because of price & the unmemorable qualities my limited short-term memory retains.

375ml bottle from Hoppy Craft, St Omer. Pours a hazed, dull brownish red, fast receding white head. Aroma sees strawberries jump first out the glass, with the first sip seeing a melange of assorted hedgerow berries, prominent cherries with some red berry shades up the rear. Hanssen's trademark savage acidity is kept in check.. sharp stuff!
