341 ml bottle, at Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV is 11%. Hazy deep golden to brown-ish amber colour, small white head. Aroma of malts, molasses and caramel, hints of smoked malts. Medium sweet flavour with the same elements, but the smoked malts are more distinct now, hints of smoked meat and smoked fish, seaweed and iodine. .

Lightly unfiltered with a bunch of transparent particles floating around, mid golden colour with a white head, decent stay and sticky foamy lacing. Some mild fruitiness (citrus, stone fruits) in the aromas with the Belgian yeast coming out nicely. The fruity flavours come out a little stronger, again blended with the yeast. A wet mouthfeel with some building bitterness in the end, gliding with light dryness. Lemon zest lingers. Quite an interesting Belgian Blonde with a touch of fruity hops.

341ml single older bottle with a best before date 04.23 - let's try it! Smells fine, with some butterscotch maltiness, with mild spicy malts that come out eventually to cut the sweetness. A little unfiltered with tiny particles all over, a white cap, good stay and decent lacing left. The alcohol seems quite well-hidden in the mouthfeel. Some fruitiness in the malt taste with good dryness. A touch of grassy hops, and mild Pils spiciness. Still, a drinkable Imperial Pilsner.

Lightly unfiltered, a tad hazed by transparent particles. A white frothy cap, good retention and sticky lacing. Smelling honey notes at first pour, like typical low alcohol blondes. Then, some decent cereal grain come out, with a touch of sour-herbal hops. The honey-cereal malt connection continues in the taste, but the hops really take control in the finish, to really up this one. This cuts to excessive sweetness found in these beers, creating a nice drying end, with a tad peachiness. Just nice, fresh grassy hops lingering slowly. A nicely hopped, good low alcohol Lager that does its job.

malt, apricots, banana and sweet fruit on the nose. a dark butterscotch body with a very thin off-white head. The taste profile features caramel malt, ripe berries, and touches of banana, and hops. The body is rich, but the taste profile is a bit thin for a 14%er. Lacking complexity too. Disappointing.

A massive taste accomplishment at 5.5% abv. The nose pops with coriander, cloves, and sweet malt. The colour is lager-like with a fluffy white head. The taste profile delivers on the spices in the nose in a big way. Coriander, cloves, peppermint and hint of pepper are prominent over sweet bready malt and some juicy citrus and floral hops. A whole whack of taste on a solid body with appropriate carbonation.

Nose is citrus, bready malt and candy cane. The taste profile picks up on the candy cane and citrus theme in the nose, including, lemon, pine, orange and peppermint making it a zesty and refreshing hop lead. Spices and floral hops come out later in the taste profile. A nice medium-high effervescence punches up the refreshment factor. Tasty, but could use a few balancing elements.

This small brewery BW is a real revelation. It hits some balances that I love in a barleywine - roasted caramel malts, some booziness,understated rich tropical fruit and maybe apricots - augmented by some unusual elements - smokiness and some saltiness, reflecting the ocean environment in which it was brewed. Definitely one of my all-time BW favourites. It is a pity that L’Abri de la Tempete produces so little volume, making availability in central Canada a bit of an issue. The 2015 version might have backed off on some taste elements such as the caramel malt and the richness of the body.
