This small brewery BW is a real revelation. It hits some balances that I love in a barleywine - roasted caramel malts, some booziness, understated rich tropical fruit and maybe apricots - augmented by some unusual elements - smokiness and some saltiness, reflecting the ocean environment in which it was brewed. Definitely one of my all-time BW favourites. It is a pity that L’Abri de la Tempete produces so little volume, making availability in central Canada a bit of an issue. The 2015 version might have backed off on some taste elements such as the caramel malt and the richness of the body.

A very slight unfiltered, very light golden-yellow colour with super tiny, transparent particles floating around. The head is white bubbly-frothy, with nice stay, leaving some thicker foamy lacing. Mild cereal grain aromas with some light Pils-spiciness and herbal touch. Not getting much saltiness, but a nice blend of light mineral water, citrus, herbs and a tad spicy malts. Quite an interesting, refreshing Blonde with still lots going on, and a nice mineral touch.

341 ml bottle, at Cardinal, Stavanger. ABV is 13%. Mahogany colour, small off-white to beige head. Pleasant malty aroma, also notes of oak, port wine and dark dried fruits. The flavour has some malty sweetness as expected, but is not overly sweet or cloying. You get the same elements as in the aroma, distinctly oaky, but also with a distinct hop bitterness in the finish. It is permitted to share the bottle between two persons, but I had no problem polishing off the bottle on my own.

Bottle. Clear golden pour, medium white head. Aroma is strong pilsner malt, sweet and loads of cereals. Slightly boozy, but that’s to be expected. Soft mouth feel, soft carb. Finish is lightly bitter, strong malty sweetness, with hints of slightly soapy, piney hops.

Hazy orange/pink pour, with a huge white head. Aroma is peppery, spicy and slightly tart with subtle earthy wood, and alcohol. Subtle carb, light mouth feel. The finish is tart, very low bitterness, notes of vanilla and earthy wood. The cranberry pulp seems to only add tartness and little to no flavour. Very interesting beer.

Dark brown pour with mahogany hues, and a medium beige head. Dark brown sugar, burnt sugar, coffee, boozy fruit cake, and strong boozy, bready malts. Oily, thick mouth feel, soft carb. The finish is very sweet, but has a long bitter butter finish also. Boozy malts, all sorts of burnt sugars with more hints of coffee. Not as boozy as I expected, but it’s still a real sipper.

Cask Days 2012.
Black pour, off white head.
Aroma of pine, resin, and grass with a touch of roasted malts, and some soy. Solid mouthfeel, low carb. Very bitter finish, with some big pine, and resin notes with a smooth, dry roasted malt/coffee after taste.

Dark Amber color, sticky white head. Aroma of floral hops, and some bitter ginger. Flavor is hoppy, and bitter with a dull almost bitter caramel finish. The hops come thorugh more in the finish. I wasn’t 100% sure what style this would fit in, and the breweries website seems to me to lean towards an IPA, and to me the alcohol also seems to lean towards that. All in all decent beer, nothing that will satisfy a hop head though.
