(bottle) Slightly hazy, amber colour with a short foamy off-white head. Moderately sweet toast-malty aroma with a tinge of caramel, notes of cacao and dried berries. Sweet flavour, medium to full bodied, smoothly carbonated mouthfeel. Malty, slightly caramelly taste; moderately sweet toast-malty finish with a whiff of warming alcohol. Decent Bock.

Bottle: slightly hazy, light amber coloured, small, a bit lacing foamy layer; dried fruit and caramel in the nose, close to a Doppelbock; slightly alcoholic; sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied; a bit warming, brandy-like, fruity bitter-sweet finish. A goody from Franconia.....

Bottle at Pig’s Ear BF. Copper colour with thin off white head. Bit over carbonated, bit metallic. Nice nutty malt. 3/5. Bottle from Erlangernick. It’s so interesting to go back to a beer I first rated so long ago even before I knew what a zwickel/landbier/kellerbier was. Slightly yeasty aroma. Vollbier I think means full beer, so you are expecting a bit more malt than in a regular German lager and you do get a slight nutty maltiness. Good drinkability. I mean it is that effortless beer you get from Franconia. So hard to make well, yet so easy to drink. As a vollbier it’s pretty good. Some white pepper hop on the finish. Certainly malty. I liked it and the bottle disappeared in about 6 minutes which is always a good sign. Yep good and worth a 10% increase in rating score.

Bottle (from "Vogel’s" Forchheim)Chestnut-amber coloured, small fluffy head, quickly diminishing; malty, a bit metallic-hoppy nose; more dry than sweet (malty) flavour, low carbonation; sweetish finish, becoming drier with a lingering aromatic hoppiness towards the end. Maybe this WM-Bier is identical to the Festbier, because both have the same alcohol content ? But the Festbier was absolutely better....................!

Clear amber with an orange shine, slow-bubbled carbonation to slim, slightly irregular yellowish head. Very clear toffee-caramel nose, remarkably alike to one of those English wrapped sweets. Then mildering to a grassy, less sweet nose. Really very inviting, ideal for spring. The main taste is on the sharp of the edge between bitter and sweet and I DON’T mean neutral. Remarkable unedited balance, WOW! Again some grassy, hayish, straw notes and some mild spice. Warming up, classical bready notes surfacing, again mildered by noble German hops. As to the palate/MF, I feel like the car journalist who HAS to find something negative to say about the dreamcar he’s testing. Yes, it IS a bit thinnish in texture, just caramel, restsugars filling in. Talk about "searching for shipnails at low tide"... Sebastian "Doppelbock", I’m going to ask you for more of these Maibocks, my friend. I could retire on them.

Clear-amber beer; collapsing off-white head, leaving some lace. Fresh, grassy, pale malts nose, though once more, very discreet. Extremely discreet taste as well - even a bit exaggeratedly so. Chestnut flour, with maybe a very slight Maillard-like flavour in the finish. Light MF - but then REALLY light. If one wouldn’t have anything in the neighbourhood, I’d say let’s have it - but in FRANCONIA??
