Motivated by a desire to ensure that the production of Oakwell’s famous Barnsley Bitter could continue, Barnsley boys Tom & Adam rescued the brewing equipment from Oakwell and set about recreating the much loved beer.
A site in Sheffield was selected as the home of the new brewery. Known as the ‘Brewing Capital of England’, the city’s proximity to the Peak District gives access to the purest water - perfect for brewing. The 22.5 barrel kit was carefully transported to the new location and painstakingly reassembled under the direction of Chief Engineer, Tim.
Stancill Brewery was ready to brew.
Production commenced in January 2014 with a revival of the historic Barnsley Bitter, true to the original recipe. Led by Head Brewer Dean, our brewery team work hard to ensure that the legacy continues to this day.

Cask at Broadfield, Sheffield. Clear golden. Tight, white, lasting head. As mentioned below, aroma is all sweet Weetabix. Taste is caramel sweet at first, followed by a slightly burnt bitterness. Sweetness stays, on the lips. Fairly bitter finish. As far as sticky, malty, session beers go, this is an easy drinker.

Cask at The Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a reddish hue and a bubbly light tan head and some broken lace. The aroma is light malt. The flavour is light bitter with a light fruit malt, weak chocolate palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. This wasn’t half bad I’ve got to say. Won’t get highly rated but it is what it is and it does what it does very well!
