Motivated by a desire to ensure that the production of Oakwell’s famous Barnsley Bitter could continue, Barnsley boys Tom & Adam rescued the brewing equipment from Oakwell and set about recreating the much loved beer.
A site in Sheffield was selected as the home of the new brewery. Known as the ‘Brewing Capital of England’, the city’s proximity to the Peak District gives access to the purest water - perfect for brewing. The 22.5 barrel kit was carefully transported to the new location and painstakingly reassembled under the direction of Chief Engineer, Tim.
Stancill Brewery was ready to brew.
Production commenced in January 2014 with a revival of the historic Barnsley Bitter, true to the original recipe. Led by Head Brewer Dean, our brewery team work hard to ensure that the legacy continues to this day.

Cask @ Lilley Langtry's, Nottingham. Extremely dark with a light-brown creamy head. Dark malty with mild roasted notes, but easy texture, so doesn't feel full or entirely stated, although it's full enough to enjoy. Traditional in design.

Cask at Swan, Long Lane, Blackheath (listed under Halesowen in RB). Pours golen yellow with a medium-sized almost white head and good lacing. Floral hops to the fore in the aroma, alongside traces of malts and grapefruit. In the mouth it is juicy, zesty and slightly sharp with floral hops that gradually come to dominate, plus grains and (later on) hints of spice and citrus. Finish is quite bitter. This is decent.

Handpull cask at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham. Light, light gold. Almost straw.clear with a small tight-ish white head. Fresh gentle aroma, fairly grassy, some lemon balm and some hay. Tastes sweet, slight notes of lime, turning to a more bitter finish. Reasonable body for the ABV, soft carbonation. And okay beer in good condition.

Cask at Old Bell, Derby. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small tan head. There’s toffee and treacle in the aroma. Treacle again to the fore in the mouth, alongside roast malts, parkin, dark fruits and oats. Later on there are hints of cola and liquorice too. Finish is slightly dry and spicy. This is an interesting beer – unusual flavouring.
