Brown 500ml bottle, best before Sept 2007, drank Feb 2007. Poured into a pint sleeve a deep red mahogany body with an off white tight foaming head, looked a picture, a real bitter, not one of these new light coloured bitters that are flooding the UK market at the moment. Aroma of biscuity malts with a hoppy undertone. Good malty flavour, strong bitter taste, fine example of how a good British bitter should taste like. For a UK non-bottled-conditioned beer, this is as good as it gets, heavy malts stay, the 5% is evident, but not overpowering. Very impressed with this beer, interesting stuff on the label too, all about why its got the name and some history about one of Englands most visited stately homes (where the brewery is), Chatsworth House.

24th Oct 2010: My first Christmas beer this season (the bottle is best before the end of Oct, so it’s last years brew). Poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ tankard. Dark ruby red in body colour a good foaming head of a light tan hue sat on top. The smell is of toasted/roasted barley, they also dominate the taste. This is a true, sit by an open fire sort of winter warmer and evokes all the traditional thoughts of a Victorian Christmas. Fuggles hops ensure the malts don’t have it their own way and the beer has a nice balanced feel to it, dark and malty throughout, but with a hoppy bitterness under the surface with comes out as the mouth dries. A difficult to find beer; but well obtaining and trying.

Cask, handpump at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Castleton, Peak District, Derbyshire 20.09.10. Pours chestnut in colour with an off-white head. Nice light nuttiness and lighty malty. Tasty bitter beer with good bitterness, very pleasant some vanilla also showing, some citrusy streaks also. Really good beer in a very good pub. A6 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.6

On gravity at the Rising Sun beer festival, Frampton Cotterell, South Gloucestershire 29/08/10. Amber with a slight, off-white head. Sweetish aroma of caramel with some fruit. Flavour was similar, with some biscuit malt, a touch of grassy hop and bitter finish. Fine.

Cask, gravity dispensed, at the 2nd Beer Festival at the Cambridge Blue, Cambridge. Amber with a ring of white head; floral aroma; flowery hop flavour; light bitter finish, slightly sticky. Rather one-dimensional.
