Description
Kestrel lager was a hugely popular and successful brand in the 1980s and 1990s when it was supported with much-enjoyed advertising campaigns featuring the comedians and actors Hugh Laurie and Russ Abbot. Having maintained a loyal following in subsequent years, in 2012 its quality and potential were recognised by Nigel McNally, who decided to take the bold step of purchasing the Kestrel lager beer brand and setting up the Kestrel Brewing Company in order to nurture and develop it.
Under his stewardship the Kestrel brand has now returned to its Scottish roots and is being brewed at a state-of-the-art facility in Glasgow, adjacent to Glasgow Cathedral. Brewing has taken place at the site since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.

500ml can from Off License, Borehamwood. Pale yellow gold colour, short-lived fizzy white foam head and aroma of sugary apple flavouring & sulphur. Taste is sweet, apple flavours, fruity tart and tangy, then cardboard, sweaty socks, oxidised notes. Medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, dry finish. Kind of OK at the start...

500ml can. Pours pale gold with high carbonation. Aroma is twigs and chemicals. Taste is twiggy, some mulch. Shitty cheap apple juice that's a few days off. £1.25 a can though, plenty of same strength tramp juice for 89p. It's doing the trick, mind.

Can from my local post office/convenience store. Pours attractive bright golden amber with a lasting creamy off white head. Aroma of malt, fruity/apple, light alcohol, and sweet caramel. Medium to heavy sweetness and light bitterness. Medium body, very sticky texture, soft carbonation. Finish is sweet and sticky. Have to say it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought but hope to never be sitting on a park bench having 5 or 6.

Can (shared by fatphil, thanks). Street tick, so appearance is a can. Aroma is cardboard, grains, nastyness, alcohol, malt. Flavor follows the nose. Overall: nasty stuff.

Can (shared by fatphil, thanks). Pours clear, slightly yellow. Aroma is some apples. Flavor is sour, sweet, apples, sugar. Drinkability is awful, feels chemical. Overall: bad, bordering horror tick. Tastes a lot better on the street and straight from the can. +3 to overall, not in the real horror territory.

Can, from the local offie. Clear, gingery gold. Film of white. Leggy in the glass. Aroma is thick, sweet malts. Some grassy hop. Not a great deal else. Taste is sticky sweet. Chewy, sticky mouthfeel. A bit heavy going. Sweet finish. Of a 500ml can I managed about 350, and it’s a rarity when I pour beer away...
