Description
Kestrel lager was a hugely popular and successful brand in the 1980s and 1990s when it was supported with much-enjoyed advertising campaigns featuring the comedians and actors Hugh Laurie and Russ Abbot. Having maintained a loyal following in subsequent years, in 2012 its quality and potential were recognised by Nigel McNally, who decided to take the bold step of purchasing the Kestrel lager beer brand and setting up the Kestrel Brewing Company in order to nurture and develop it.
Under his stewardship the Kestrel brand has now returned to its Scottish roots and is being brewed at a state-of-the-art facility in Glasgow, adjacent to Glasgow Cathedral. Brewing has taken place at the site since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.

Bottle from B&M, Rochdale. Pale golden-amber with a very thin head and a small carbonation. Has a regular lager sweetness in its taste with a little bit of alcohol in its aftertaste.

Can from local offie. Drunk at home. Ok, maybe I am too much of a high rater, but... this isn’t bad. In its own way, it’s actually quite tasty. Clear gold with more than its fair share of forced carbonation. Nice aroma! Pear, butterscotch and honey. The taste isn’t great but neither is it offensive. Sweeter than most lagers, with a thicker body as well. I hate to say that I would actually drink this again.

500 ml can. Clear golden body with a small white head. Aroma is malty with boozy alcohol. Flavor is sweet, slightly metallic, malt, low bitterness and raw, boozy alcohol. Medium body and boozy aftertaste. Not very nice at all by any means.

Can on the train to Portsmouth, IOW Jolly Day, thanks to Soapy 24/08/14 - served in a bin bag, a UK tribute to the brown paper bag. Clear light golden with a moderate off white covering. Nose is light caramel, straw, bready notes, light butterscotch. Taste comprises much the same, buttery twang, light booze, moderate carbonation and paper notes in a lightly drying close. Pretty shit !

Can in a black plastic bag during the IoW Jolly. It pours clear gold with a thick white head. The nose is bready, sweet, sugary, corn, and mild garbage action. The taste is sweet, doughy, cornbread, syrupy, sugar cane and only mild alcohol with a short, sweetish finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and hides abv well, yet gets you buzzed quickly. Weirdly enough I sort of like this.
