Description
Maxim Brewery began full production in Houghton le Spring in 2007.

To brew the best beers possible requires the best brewery equipment available. Our 20 barrel brewery equipment was previously at the Canongate Brewery on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. This was Scottish & Newcastle’s pilot brew house and as you would expect, was built to a very high specification. Indeed, it remains probably the best equipment of its size anywhere in the UK today. Our flexible Brewery with its special Lautering system allows us to brew between 3,000 and 17,000 pints per day and importantly ensures that we can maintain the highest quality and guarantee a regular supply of cask, keg and bottled beers to the drinkers of the North East and beyond.

[Cask at The Crosse Keys (JDW), London.] A straw coloured pour with a loose white head; floral aroma; crisp grainy body with a fresh bitterness, floral with a little citrus; and a clean bitter finish. Rather tasty.

On cask. Appearance - golden and clear. No head. Nose - orange, bread and a hint of caramel. Taste - orange and caramel mainly. Palate - light to medium bodied, sweet and tangy. Overall - OK but could be fresher.

Cask at Babington Arms, Derby. Pours a pale gold with a small white head and good lacing. There’s floral hops and yeast in the aroma plus some hints of citrus. In the mouth it starts off slightly sweet with continental hops, before becoming fairly bitter with grapefruit. Lemon and some underlying caramel. Finish is bitter and quite sticky. Not too bad, but let down by the finish !

Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Hazy golden with a creamy head. Although very much an ale in design, lager malts are dominant here. Has a fruity aroma though.

13th October 2023, hand-pulled half-pint in my local Wetherspoons. Light yellow/golden body, snow white pillow of foam on top, almost clear. Mild citrus leanings and crisp mouthfeel, almost liked it.
