Cask at the Bell, waltham St lawrence. Chestnut with a loose beige head; nutty, earthy aroma; sweet earthy malt taste and a slowly building herbal bitterness; before a nutty caramel finish. A satisfying ale - best so far of this season’s rugby offerings.

Cask @ Old Post Office, Halifax. Reddy-brown with the latter dominant. It does not have much of a head either. Has dried coffee roasted malts in its nose, but overwhelmingly a berry sweetness in taste.

Cask at the Devonshire Arms, Cambridge. Mid-gold with a small layer of white head. Slight cereal aroma but not a lot there. Taste has an engaging bitterness to it. Nicely carbonated for a cask beer. Not particularly exciting, and I’m not convinced by the APA style label, but what the hell, it’s beer.

Cask at the Devonshire Arms, Cambridge. Mid- to dark gold. Flat. Cereal, lemon, brown sugar and honey on the aroma. Taste is fruity, full and sweet, tending to turn more bitter as it goes on. It’s got a fair bit of flavour for the ABV but isn’t all that exciting.

Cask @ White Hart, Todmorden. Darker amber in colour with a small creamy head. Crisp, but with a thinnish tasting sweetness, and a smoothness in its texture. Has grainy malts in its nose with a hint of chocolate.

Cask at Cask Corner, Doncaster. Mid-gold, clear, bit of white head. Malty, slightly buttery, not much aroma. Maybe a bit of elderflower? Bittersweet taste with a pleasant tartness which continues to the finish. Thinnish body. Competent for sure but not all that exciting.
