Description
As the name implies, Felinfoel brewery is situated in ‘Felinfoel’, a small village adjoining Llanelli in Wales. Historians tell us that in the old days the inn brewed its own beer, but only during the winter months. The keeping qualities and the strength of the beers, therefore, were of prime importance and the popularity of ‘Felinfoel Beer’ led to the local inn brewing for other inns in the locality. This, in turn, led to the present brewery being built in 1878 to accommodate demand.

They became the first UK brewery to can beer in 1935. Still family owned, this is now Wales's oldest brewery.

Cask at the Ipswich Beer Festival 2004, gravity dispense. This is now the only cask ale from Felinfoel. Chestnut colour. Malty aroma, hints of sulphur. Flavour is malty sweet, sulphurous and dusty. Very low on hops. Dusty aftertaste.

A hazy amber beer with a fine though disappearing orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of fruit, spices, and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of oranges, spices, and caramel before a very dry end sets in. The body though is thin.

Bottle. Dark amber brown with a decent off-white head. Aroma of grassy hops and sweet caramel malt. The flavor is mostly sweet malt with a little roastiness/peatiness. Not a typical ESB, but good none-the-less.

Nice brown colored beer with highlights of deep ruby red. Small head. Caramel aroma matches the malty sweet flavors. Very little hop assertion. Moves off with a nice dry finish. Not your usual ESB, but a nice brew nevertheless.

Black. Evident and delicious aroma of madeira. Short, roasty, chocolatey flavour. Dry with empty finish, but what an aroma!

Black ale, with a thin but persistent collar of foam. Quite sour aroma, mineral oil. Distinctive sour character, with nice malt and roasted malt note; good balance. Palate in tune, mix of sourness and bitterness, pretty surprising in his balance.

Typically robust Welsh ale - compares better with English winter ales than with bitters or pales.

The legend of 2 pint honk up John ... 2 pints of this and his puke remained spattered on the drain cover opposite the Alex, Derby, for a good 5 or 6 weeks.

Early amateur tick, March '91.

Malty, dark fruits, not great condition. Put me off the brewer for a good few years although navigated my half fine ... if not being a great experience!
