Gravity cask at the 2016 Cambridge Beer Festival. Dark brown, barely translucent. The tiniest amount of tan head. Coffee and malt dominate the aroma. Taste starts sweet with a liquorice note, but the hoppy bitter takes over to the finish, which kind of sits bitterly in the throat. Very thin body for a stout. Not perfect but an enjoyable beer.

Gravity cask at the 2016 Cambridge Beer Festival. Dark gold. Aroma of tangerine, mango, apple and a whiff of sulphur. Pithy bittersweet taste. The malt backbone shines thorugh in the latter half of the sip to the finish. Bitter aftertaste. An eminently drinkable strong ale.

Handpull cask at the Haymakers, Chesterton, Cambridge. Mid-brown, translucent and quite flat. No head. Mild coffee, stone fruit, and a hint of treacle in the aroma. Sweet and warming taste, with black cherry and some bitter coffee grounds in the long finish. Full chewy body. Very good for the style and ABV.

Cask at the Devonshire Arms, Milton. Dark reddish-gold, wispy white head. Buttery aroma. Taste is bittersweet and pleasant enough but the aftertaste is jarringly acrid. Not a great effort from Milton.

Handpull cask at the Haymakers, Cambridge. Honey brown with a hint of red. Cream-coloured head that leaves thick foamy lacing down the glass. Caramel, orange blossom honey, crème brûlée, hot buttered toast, gardenia and a hint of spruce on the tantalising nose. Taste is chewy sweet and first but this is reigned in with bitter fruity hops. Finish is balanced with bitterness just edging it. This is a seriously good bitter.

Cask at the Cambridge Winter Ales Festival 2016. Mid-brown, watery-looking and flat. Used coffee grounds and cereal in the scent,sweet taste with some bitter-sour nearer to the finish. Body is weak, it tastes a bit like beer-flavoured water. There are some decent flavours in here but when all is said and done, it’s not my kind of drink.

Gravity Cask at St Peters Ale House, Bedford. Dark ruby brown with some translucency, pretty much flat. Light aroma of liquorice and warming alcohol. Taste is yummy: sweet and warming with enough hop backbone to give it balance. Raisin, port and chocolate in the finish. Medium to full body, slick mouthfeel. Good stuff overall.
