Description
It all began with a 27 year old brewer, a windowless apartment, and a mountain of credit card debt. Phillips’ first brews were about as unconventional as his financing structure. In the conservative beer climate of 2001 the brewery launched with an Espresso Stout, a Raspberry Wheat Ale, and a boldy-hopped IPA; a suitable foreshadow for the creativity to come.

Since then Phillips has moved out of the apartment and into a more brewing-appropriate facility (with windows) closer to town. We have launched a soda company, a distillery, and most recently a malting facility–the only one of its kind in Canada.

Can. Just hazy amber with an inch of white head. Aroma of grapefruit, bread crust, gentle fresh cut pine. Medium bodied. Resin, some citrus, bread crust - guess I would have preferred just a little cleaner but it's characterful and engaging. Brief, decisive bitter end.

473ml can. (5.0% ABV) Pours a slightly hazy amber-red with a medium, foamy, long lasting, light pink head that laces. Sweet fruity aroma of juicy berries (black currant, I guess), wheat malt and light yeast. Sweet flavour of grainy wheat malt, black currant and earthy yeast in a dry, tart finish. Light body with a watery texture and average carbonation. Refreshing and crushable, a good summer beer.

Dullish and quite pale. Thin head. A bit of diacetyl, overripe fruit, pears and piney hop. Moderate bitterness but overripe fruits and slight diacetyl are issues here. A bit clunky.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Pale blond colour, clean. Delicate aroma, crisp malt, hay, and that Brut IPA character. Dry mouthfeel; as expected, not much malt flavour, the hop seems a bit herbaceous, and the finish is a bit stale, without the delicate elements of better Brut IPAs.
Drinkable.

Hazy yellow body and modest foam, strong hops on the nose with chili con carne hints. Flavour is sweet hops witb vegetal hints. No malt to be seen for miles, it was washed away maybe. A little weak on the mouth. Passionfruit does show but only if you're told about it. Adequate.

Muddy red body and okay foam, soft blackcurrant smells like the potpourri in my stepmother's bathroom. Could be Wal-Mart, but knowing her it could be some craft project from Michael's. Anyways the flavour is mostly sweet black currant, some sourness, okay skin. Finish is slightly watery. A little boring but it does what it says on the label.
